Thenetworktookmorethantenyearstodevelop.Itwasfirsttriedoutin1969.Foranothertwentyyears,itwasusedonlybyscientistswhoworkedwiththeU.S.governmentandbysomeengineers.Then,in1990,thearmyofAmericagavethecontroloftheInternettotheNationalScienceFoundation.TheInternetthenbecameavailabletocollegesallovertheUnitedStatesandtoscientistsacrossEurope.
