2.SummaryofthePreliminaryResearch
Inthispartofmywork,Iidentifymyresearchbasedonmyteachingexperience.ThispartofmystudywasconductedfromMarch10,2011toMay25,2011.
2.1Problem
Myproblemishowtoimprovethestudents’readingabilityandinterestinEnglishstudy.Accordingtomyobservation,Ihavefoundthestudentshavethefollowingproblems:
theyarenotinterestedinEnglishreadingverymuch.Theydon’tlikedoingthereadingpracticeIassignthemtodoafterclass.Theycanonlyremenberonemeaningofthewordswhichtheyhavelearned.Theycan’tusethesefunctionalwordswhichhavecomplexmeaningsandusage,suchastake,get,do,makeetc.properly,eventhoughtheyknowthem.Theyhavelearnedsomecommunicativelanguage,buttheycan’tstateaneventordescribeaperson,exceptaskandanswer.Theyarelackinginlanguageexpression.Thismaycauseimpolitnessincommunication,whichmayhaveeffectsoncommunicativeactivitiesdirectly.Itisobviousthattheycanhardlydeveloptheirreadingcompetenceinthefuture.
2.2Problemanalysis
Inmyteaching,theproblemidentifiedwasreallyaseriousproblem.Mypreliminaryreseachconfirmedthatthereweresixmainreasonsthataccountedforstudents’reluctancetodothereadingassignmentsoutofclassandcan’tunderstandthetextwell.
Firstofall,theyhavenoreadinghabits.Theyonlyfocusonlisteningandspeaking,buthaven’tpaidmuchattentiontoreading.Althoughalargenumberofsudentscanreadorrecitetextsordialogues,theymaynotknowthesinglewordthatwepickedoutfromthetext.Thisindicatesthattheydidn’tlookatthewordscarefullywhilereading.Theyhaven’tdevelopedreadinghabit.Secondly,somestudentshaddifficultyindoingreadingpractice,sotheyprefertospendtimeinplayingthanread.Thirdly,moststudentsdarenottoreadthenewwordswhilereading,eventherearesomespellingrules.Theyjustwaitforteacherstoteachthem.Fourthly,studentscan’tguessthemeaningsofthenewwordsaccordingtothecontext,onlytogiveup.Thisgreatlyaffectedstudents’readinginterestandreadingeffects.Fifthly,withthedepthoflearning,studentshaveshowntheshortcomingsinsentenceconversion.Studentscan’tgoonreadingfreelybecauseoflackingknowledgeinsentenceconversion.Lastbutnotleast,moststudentsfeltoverloadedbecauseofaheavierhomeworkassignments.
2.2.1Analyticmethod
