TobiasWolff(1945—)wasborninAlabamain1945.Hisparentsdivorcedwhenhewasaboy.Wolff’smotherretainedcustodyofhim.Asachild,Wolfftraveledwithhismother,Rosemary,tothePacificNorthwest,wheresheremarried.GrowingupinthePacificNorthwest,youngTobiassoonwasforcedtoendurelifeunderhisstrictandcruelstepfather.Hiseffortstogetawayfromhisstepfatherledtohisself-transformation.
ThatperiodofWolff’slifeisrecountedinThisBoy’sLife:
AMemoir,whichwaslatermadeintoafilm.
HeliveswithhisfamilyinupstateNewYorkandteacheswritingatSyracuseUniversity.
From1964through1968,WolffservedasalieutenantwiththeU.S.ArmySpecialForces(GreenBerets)inVietnam.HelaterrecountedhiswartimeexperiencesinthememoirInthePharaoh’sArmy:
MemoirsoftheLostWar.
In1972WolffearnedhisB.A.andthenhisM.A.fromOxfordUniversitywithFirstClassHonorsinEnglishthreeyearslater.
HeistheauthoroftheshortnovelTheBarracksThief,whichwonthe1985PEN/FaulknerAward;twocollectionsofshortstories,BackintheWorld(collecting“SayYes”)andIntheGardenoftheNorthAmericanMartyrs,whichreceivedtheSaintLawrenceAwardforfictionin1982.

SixcollegestudentsfoundedtheKuKluxKlanbetweenDecember1865Tennessee.Thesixyoungmenorganizedasasocialcluborfraternityandspenttheirtimeinhorseplayofvarioustypes,includingwearingdisguisesandgallopingabouttownafterdark.Theyweresurprisedtolearnthattheirnightlyappearanceswerecausingfear,particularlyamongfarmerslavesinthearea.Theyquicklytookadvantageofthiseffectandthegroupbeganarapidexpansion.Variousfactionsformedindifferenttowns,whichledtoameetinginApril1867tocodifyrulesandorganizationalstructure.
TargetingthosesetfreeaftertheAmericanCivilWar—theAfricanAmericans,KKKdesignedtospreadfearthroughouttheBlackpopulationthatstilllivedinthesouthernstates.Themosthatredwasdirectedagainstthepoorblackfamiliesinthesouthwhowereveryvulnerabletoattack.
Reconstruction:
In1867,GeneralNathanBedfordForrest,convertedtheKlanintoaparamilitaryforcethatservedtodirectlyopposetheformationofRepublicangovernments.Klansmendressedinwhiterobesandcoveredhoods,rodeonhorses,anddraggedblackpeopleandsomewhiterepublicansfromtheirhomes,assaultingthembywhippingorlynchingthem.Suchassaultsweresuccessfulinkeepingblackmenfromthepolls,andthusalteringelectionresults.
WiththeenactmentofCongressionallegislationandenforcementofthelawbythefederalgovernment,theKlanwasextinguishedin1871—1872.
Bythe1960s,astheCivilRightsMovementwasemerging,theKlan’smembershipreachedalmosttwentythousand.LiketheformerKlanorganization,therewasnotacentralleadership.
WhiletheKlanstillexiststoday,itsmembershipisinthelowthousands.TheKlanhastiestootherwhitesupremacistorganizationssuchastheAryanNationsandtheSkinheads.
