TheimaginationLibraryhasstartedintheunderservedandlow-incomeneighborhoodsofAustin,GarfieldPark,LittleVillageandNorthLawndale.Parentsinthoseneighborhoodscansignuptheirchildrennow.OpenBookswillcontinuetoexpandtheImaginationLibrarytootherneighborhoodssoon,sootherChicagoansshouldbepatient.
Studiesshowthatahome-basedlibrarycanleadtoachild’sschoolsuccess—andonaverageamiddle-classfamilyhasabout13booksforeachchild,Johnsonsaid.Yet,inChicagoandnationwide,morethan60percentoflow-incomehouseholdshavenochildren’sbooks.“That’sanimportantdifference,sinceachild’sgreatestbraingrowthtakesplacefrombirthtoage5,andbyage3,almost85percentofachild’sbrainisalreadyformed,”Johnsonsaid.“Thepossibilitytogetkids‘kindergartenready’isendless.”
