ThisunitfocusesonlearningEnglishwithtextAtalkingabouthowgrammarandvocabularycanbetaughtefficientlyandtextBhowthelanguagecanbelearnedsuccessfully.Inotherwords,oneisabouthowtoteachandtheotherhowtoleam.Thewritingstylebetweenthetwotextsisalsosomewhatdifferent,thefirstoneismorerelaxedandhumorous,atypicalstyleinEnglishdiscourse.Thetoneofthesecondtexthoweverismoreformalandserious.Whenteachersfamiliarizestudentswiththetexts,theyneedtopointouttheirrespectivewritingstylesandalsothinkabouthowtoinvolvestudentsinclassactivitiesfromtwodifferentangles:
teachingvs.learning.MeanwhilestudentsshouldbeencouragedtoexpresstheiropinionsaboutthecurrentwayofteachinginanEnglishclass,therebyexpressingtheirthoughtsfreely.ActivitiescanrangefromclassdiscussiontopeerinterviewandpaneldebatesuchaswhethergrammarisofcrucialimportanceinleamingEnglishandhowonecanexcelwhenlearningthatlanguage.StudentsneedtosharetheirleamingexperienceandfindoutmoreeffectivewaystolearnEnglishgrammarandvocabulary.

1.LearningEnglishgrammar
Thegoalofdevelopinglearners’functionalcompetenceinasecondlanguageisnotanewidea.Originally,thetermGrammarreferredtotheartofwriting.Asusedtodaybymanyteachersandlearners,grammarislooselyunderstoodtobeasetofrulesthatgovernalanguage.Communicativelanguageteachinghasplacedarenewedemphasisontheroleofgrammar,especiallyintheearlystagesofinstruction.Viewinggrammarwithallofitscomponentshelpslanguageteachersandleamersunderstandthecomplexityofwhatitmeanstoknowthegrammarofalanguage.Clearly,thegoaloflanguagelearninginacommunicativeclassroomisforlearnerstoacquirethegrammarofthesecondlanguageinitsbroadestsensetoenablethemtounderstandandmakemeaningthatis,tobecomeproficientusersofthelanguage.Researchandexperiencehaveshownthatexplicitteachingofgrammaticalrulesdoesnotproducesuchcompetence.Howshouldgrammarbetaughteffectively?
