TheWorldWildlifeFund(WWF)beganEarthHourinSydney,Australia,in2007asawaytoraiseawarenessaboutglobalwarming.Byturningofftheirlightsforonehour,Sydneysidersconservedenergyandshowedthattheysupportactionagainstglobalwarming.
AtfirsttheeventwasheldonlyinSydney.Butinterestspreadaroundtheworld,andin2008,between50millionand100millionpeopleacrosstheplanetobservedEarthHour.Thisyear,theWWFhopedthat1billionpeoplewouldturnofftheirlightsforEarthHour.
