Theywerenamed“Rafflesia”afteraBritishcolonist(殖民者),SirStamfordRaffles,whowasthefirsttoofficiallyidentifyoneintheearly19thcentury.HopefullyforRaffles’sake,itwasnamedafterhimtohonorthediscovery,notbecauseofthegoodsir’ssmell.
Luckily,ittakesaspecialkindofscientiststoruntowardoneoftheseflowersratherthanaway,butinthiscasetheprizewasworththesmell.Whateveritssmell,it’saspecialplant,andit’sencouragingthatsuchrarenaturalwonderscanstillfindroomtogrowonourcrowdedplanet.
