RecentlyIhavereadTheOldManandtheSea,Iwasdeeplymovedbytheoldmanandhisspirit.
TheauthorofthebookErnestHemingwayisoneofthemostfamousAmericannovelist,short-storywriterandessayist.TheOldManandtheSeawaswrittenin1951inCuba,andpublishedin1952andwonthePulitzerPrizeforfictionin1953andhewontheNobelPrizeforLiteraturein1954.ThebookwasthelastmajorworkoffictiontobeproducedbyHemingwayandpublishedinhislifetime.Oneofhismostfamousworks.
It’sastoryaboutaoldmanstrugglingwithnature,thoughhewasdefeatedatlast,insomeextent,hehasalreadychallengedhimselfandnature.Santiago,theheroofthestory,hadgoneeighty-fourdayswithouttakingafishback.Atfirst,aboynamedManolionhadbeenwithhim,butSantiagocatchevenonefish.Theboyhadgoneathisparents’ordersinaluckyboatwhichcaughtthreegoodfishthefirstweek.SantiagoisaveryoldCubanfisherman,evenhehadbeenunabletocatchasinglefishfortotallyeight-fourdays.Hedidn’tgiveup.hemadehisdecisionthatheshouldfishagaintogetovertheunluckytime.Andheheldthebeliefthat
hecoulddoitandhewouldbeluckyenoughtofish,butmeanwhile,heshouldgotodeeperwaters.Onthe85thday,hecaughtamassivemarlin.Butaftertwodaysandnights'fierceandtoughfighting,theoldmanwasonlytobringbackalargecolossalmarlinskeleton,aworn-outboat,andhisexhaustedbody.Buthestillbeappreciated.IbelieveeverybodywhohasreadthebookmustadmireSantiago’sperseverance.WhenIread“theseniorfishermanthink:
Heretotheseacoastreallywastoonear,perhapscouldhaveabiggerfishinafartherplace...”Iextremelyadmirethisseniorfisherman,becausehebynowalreadyprojectedonsomefish,buthehadnotsettledtothepresentsituation,butwasapproachesthebiggergoaladvance.WhenIread“thebigmarlinstartfasttogatherroundtheyoungfishingboathover,twinedthecableonthemast,theoldpersonrighthandlifteduphighthesteelfork,leaptthewatersurfaceinittheflash,didutmostthrowstoitsheart,onewailendedthebigfish'slife,itwasstaticfloatsonthewatersurface...Myheartalsolikedtogetherthebigstonefalls.Iextremelyadmireoldpersonthatkinddonotdread,therelentlessspirit,althoughknowsthematchstrengthisverystrong,buthenotslightlyflinches,butiswelcomesdifficultlyabove.Thereisnodoubtthatheisgreat,becausehenevergaveupinthefaceofdifficultiesthatheshowedgreatenduranceinhisbattleagainstthesea.“Butamanisnotmadefordefeat,”hesaid,“Amancanbedestroyedbutnotdefeated.”SantiagowasoldjustasHemingwaysaid

IthinkSantiagoisahero,notafailure.Thevalueofhislifewascompletelyreflectedinthewaywhichhecaughtfish.Heistherealwinnerinhisownworld.Wecanlearnfromhimthatnomatterwhatdifficultieswemeet,wemustholdourhonor.Wemaylostthisgame,butweshouldnevergiveourselvesupashopeless.Iamwillingtoliveastheoldman,tofaceanychallengesinthefutureandnevergiveup.
