HighereducationintheUnitedStatesisanoptionalfinalstageofformallearningfollowingsecondaryeducation.Highereducation,alsoreferredtoaspost-secondaryeducation,thirdstage,thirdlevel,ortertiaryeducationoccursmostcommonlyatoneofthe4,726degree-grantinginstitutions,eithercollegesoruniversitiesinthecountry.Thesemaybepublicuniversities,privateuniversities,liberalartscolleges,orcommunitycolleges.
StrongresearchandfundinghavehelpedmakeAmericancollegesanduniversitiesamongtheworld'smostprestigious,makingthemparticularlyattractivetointernationalstudents,professorsandresearchersinthepursuitofacademicexcellence.
In2009,21.3percentoftheadultpopulationabove18yearshadattendedcollege,buthadnodegree,7.5percentheldanassociate'sdegree,17.6percentheldabachelor'sdegree,and10.3percentheldagraduateorprofessionaldegree.Thehistoricalgendergaphasreversed,withasignificantmajorityofstudentsnowbeingfemale.NewEnglandandColoradohadthehighestproportionofcollegegraduates,andtheSouthCentralstatesthelowest.
