Inrecentyearsthechemicalprocessesindustryhasfacedimportantsocial,technicalandeconomicalchallenges.Asaresult,thenatureofitsproducts,businessstrategiesandultimatelytheneedsassociatedwiththeskillsandtechnicalknowledgeofchemicalengineerssufferedenormousevolutions.Oneofsuchmainchangesisrelatedtotheemergenceofchemicalproductdesign(CPD)asaspecificandcriticalnewfieldwithinthescopeofchemicalengineering.TheimportanceofCPDteachinginchemicalengineeringcoursesisbecomingwellrecognizedbyanumberofdifferentandleadinguniversities.ThispaperpresentsaCPDcourseconceivedandtaughtattheUniversityofCoimbratofinalyearstudentsinafiveyearchemicalengineeringdegree.ItwasdevelopedwithaspecialfocusontheconnectionsbetweenCPDandqualityengineeringtools.Thecoursewasconsideredasaproductbyitselfandconceivedassuch,namelythroughaclearidentificationofitsstrategicscope(mission,visionandvalues),aims(skillstobedevelopedandknowledgetobeacquired)andstructuralfeatures(functionalorganization,timeallocation,learningpractices,programmaticcontentsandperformanceappraisal).Asampleoftwospecificchemicalproductdesignprojectscarriedoutbyteamsofstudentsisalsodescribed.Thisteachingexperiencehasbeenveryrewardingandstimulatingfromtheperspectivesofbothfacultyandstudents.ItshowsthatCPDisindeedanewdisciplinethatcanandshouldbeofferedtomoreandmorechemicalengineeringstudentsallovertheworld,andthatitcangainalotthroughtheapplicationofqualitymanagementprinciplesandqualityengineeringtools.

Toexplorethesequestions,weconductedanempiricalstudyoftwoalternativeCS1studioexperiencesinwhichstudentsusedoneoftwodifferentkindsofalgorithmdevelopmentandvisualizationtechnology:
(a)atexteditorcoupledwithartsupplies,or(b)ALVISLive!
acomputer-basedalgorithmdevelopmentandvisualizationtool.WefoundthatthestudentswhousedALVISLive!
developedalgorithmswithsignificantlyfewersemanticerrors.Moreover,discussionsmediatedbyALVISLive!
hadsignificantlymorestudentaudiencecontributions,andretainedasharperfocusonthespecificdetailsofalgorithmbehavior,leadingtothecollaborativeidentificationandrepairofsemanticerrors.Inaddition,discussionsmediatedbybothALVISLive!
andartsuppliescontainedsubstantialevidenceofhigherorderthinking.Basedonourresults,wemakerecommendationsforeducatorsinterestedinexploringstudio-basedapproaches,andweproposeanagendaforfutureresearchintostudio-basedlearningincomputerscienceeducation.

Abstract
Intheautomotiveindustry,themodeldrivendevelopmentofsoftware,todayconsideredasthestandardparadigm,isgenerallybasedontheuseofthetoolMATLABSimulink/Stateflow.Toincreasethequality,thereliability,andtheefficiencyofthemodelsandthegeneratedcode,checkingandeliminationofdetectedguidelineviolationsdefinedinhugecatalogshasbecomeanessentialtaskinthedevelopmentprocess.Itrepresentssuchatremendousamountofboringworkthatitmustnecessarilybeautomated.InthepastwehaveshownthatgraphtransformationtoolslikeFujaba/MOFLONallowforthespecificationofsinglemodelingguidelinesonaveryhighlevelofabstractionandthatguidelinecheckingtoolscanbegeneratedfromthesespecificationseasily.Unfortunately,graphtransformationlanguagesdonotofferappropriateconceptsforreuseofspecificationfragments—aMUST,whenwedealwithhundredsofguidelines.AsaconsequencewepresentanextensionofMOFLONthatsupportsthedefinitionofgenericrewriterulesandcombinesthemwiththereflectiveprogrammingmechanismsofJavaandthemodelrepositoryinterfacestandardJavaMetadataInterface(JMI).
