Babyhoatzinshaveaclawontheleadingedgeofeachwingandanotherattheendofeachwingtip.Usingthesefourclaws,togetherwiththebeak(喙),theycanclimbaboutinthebushes,lookingverymuchlikeprimitivebirdsmusthavedone.Thehostzins,however,liveinthemodernworld.
DuringthedriermonthsbetweenDecemberandMarchhoatzinsflyabouttheforestingroupsof20to30birds,butinApril,whentherainyseasonbegins,theycollecttogetherinsmallerlivingunitsoftwotosevenbirdsforproducingpurposes.
Whendangercomesintheformofasnakeoramonkey,theyounghoatzins—maybethreeinonefamily—jumpoverthesideintotheriver.Theyswimaboutunderthewateruntilitissafetoreturnandthen,usingtheirclaws,liftthemselvesupthroughthebranchesandgetbackhome.Whentheyhavelearnedtoflytheylosetheirclawsandescapeenemiesnotbyswimmingbutbyflyingoff,inaslowandheavyway,toaneighboringtree.
