TheStatueofLibertywasputupin1886.ItwasagifttotheUnitedStatesfromthepeopleofFrance.OvertheyearsFranceandtheUnitedStateshadaspecialrelationship.In1776FrancehelpedtheAmericancoloniesgainindependencefromEngland.TheFrenchwantedtodosomethingspecialfortheU.S.centennial,its100thbirthday.
Laboulayewasawell-knownFrenchmanwhoadmiredtheUnitedStates.Onenightatadinnerinhishouse,Laboulayetalkedabouttheideaofagift.AmongLaboulaye’sguestswastheFrenchsculptorFrédéricAugusteBartholdi.Bartholdithoughtofastatueofliberty.Heofferedtodesignthestatue.Atthesametime,hewasinlovewithawomanwhomhehadmetinCanada.Hismothercouldnotapproveofherson'saffectionforawomanshehadnevermet,butBartholdiwentaheadandmarriedhislovein1876.ThatsameyearBartholdihadassembledthestatue'srightarmandtorch,anddisplayedtheminPhiladelphia.Itissaidthathehadusedhiswife'sarmasthemodel,butfeltherfacewastoobeautifulforthestatue.Heneededsomeonewhosefacerepresentedsufferingyetstrength,someonemoreseverethanbeautiful.Hechosehismother.TheStatueofLibertywasdedicatedonanislandinUpperNewYorkBayin1886.Ithadhismother'sfaceandhiswife'sbody,butBartholdicalledit"mydaughter,Liberty".
