GuydeMaupassant,thewell-knownFrenchshortstorywriterandnovelist,wasbornonAugust5,1850.Whenhewasyoung,hehadagreatinterestinliterature.HepractisedwritingliteraryworksundertheguidanceofthefamousnovelistFlaubert.AndBalzacwasanotherteacherofhis.Sohewroteinthetraditionof19thcenturyFrenchrealism,andbecameoneofthemostfamousFrenchcriticalrealistsofthelate19thcentury.
Maupassant'sstorieswerebuiltaroundtheeverydaylifeofthesimplehumblepeople.Hehadafineuseofirony.Hisstylewasdirectandsimple,withattentiontorealisticdetails.Hesawclearlythetoil,sufferingsandthebitterlyironichappeningsinhumanlives.Athisbest,hewasabletoputintoafewpagesalifestorywhichwouldtakeotherwritersawholevolumetodescribe.
MostofMaupassant'sworksareaboutthepeasantlifeinNormandy,theFrance-PrussianWarandthelifeofthepettybourgeoisie.AshehadheldanumberofgovernmentpositionsinParicesince1871,hebecamefamiliarwiththelifeofthegovernmentworkers.Andthisexperiencehelpedhimcreatehisbestshortstory“TheDiamondNecklace”,fromwhichourpresenttextisadapted.Almostahundredyearsafteritsfirstpublicationthestorystilltouchesthereadersdeeplytotheirhearts.
Maupassantsufferedagreatdealfromillnessinhislatelife.Yethestruggledtocontinuewritingwithtremendouswillpower.Hehadbutashortlife,anddiedattheageof43(onJuly6,1893).
2.AbouttheText
ThisshortplayisastageversionofTheNecklace,oneofMaupassant'sbest-knownshortstories.Ittellsaboutavainwoman,wifeofasmallclerk,whoborrowedadiamondnecklacetogotothepalaceball.Butunfortunatelyshelostthenecklace.Thensheandherhusbandhadtoworktenlongyearstopayforit.
TheheroinewasnamedMathilde,whousedtobeaprettygirl.Beingborninaclerk'sfamily,shehadnohopeofmarryingamanofwealthandposition.SosheletherselfbemarriedtoPierreLoisel,asmallclerkinagovernmentoffice.Theywerenotrichandlivedasimplelife.
Oneeveningherhusbandbroughthomeaninvitationforthepalaceball.Itwasthefirsttimeintheirlivesthattheyhadbeeninvitedtoanimportantoccasionlikethis.Butthewifedidnotfeelhappyatall,becauseshehadnodressfortheball.AstheballwasveryimportanttoPierre,hedecidedtobuyheranewdress,whichcostaboutfourhundredfrancs.Thatwasallhehadsaved.ButMathildehadnojewelleryandshedidn'twanttogotothepalacewithoutjewelley.Herhusbandsuggestedthatsheshouldgoandborrowsomejewelleryfromarichfriendofhers,JeanneForrestier.Jeannewasverykindandfriendly.ShebroughtoutherjewelryforMathildetochoosefrom.Mathildeborrowedadiamondnecklace.
