Similarly,theCaliforniadepartmentofAgingreceived43,000nursinghomecomplaintsin2014.Somesaidpatientabuseorneglectofpatients;othersreportedmissingitems.Andsomecommentedonthequalityofthefood.
Butfindingthechannelsthroughthemtoputforwardacomplaintcanbetiringandtimeconsumption.Manyconsumerssimplydon’tbother,andsomebecomelostinthesystem.Whetherthecomplaintisagainstahospitaloralong-termcarefacility,theprocessissimilar—andmanypeoplecanhelp,includingthefacility’sstaff,insurancecompanyrepresentativesandstateregulators.
