@#@newAmericanmanufacturing,newskillsandeducationforAmericanworkers,andnewsourcesofAmerican-madeenergy.Thesedays,we’regettinganotherpainfulreminderwhydevelopingnewenergyissoimportanttoourfuture.Justliketheydidlastyear,gaspricesarestartingtoclimb.Onlythistime,it’shappeningearlier.Andthathurtseveryone–everyonewhoownsacar;@#@everyonewhoownsabusiness.Itmeansyouhavetostretchyourpaycheckevenfurther.Somefolkshavenochoicebuttodrivealongwaytowork,andhighgaspricesarelikeataxstraightoutoftheirpaychecks.Now,somepoliticiansalwaysseethisasapoliticalopportunity.Andsinceit’sanelectionyear,they’realreadydustingofftheirthree-pointplansfor$2gas.I’llsaveyouthesuspense:
@#@Steponeisdrill,steptwoisdrill,andstepthreeiskeepdrilling.Wehearthesamethingeveryyear.WelltheAmericanpeoplearen’tstupid.Youknowthat’snotaplan–especiallysincewe’realreadydrilling.It’sabumpersticker.It’snotastrategytosolveourenergychallenge.It’sastrategytogetpoliticiansthroughanelection.Youknowtherearenoquickfixestothisproblem,andyouknowwecan’tjustdrillourwaytolowergasprices.Ifwe’regoingtotakecontrolofourenergyfutureandavoidthesegaspricespikesdowntheline,thenweneedasustained,all-of-the-abovestrategythatdevelopseveryavailablesourceofAmericanenergy–oil,gas,wind,solar,nuclear,biofuels,andmore.Weneedtokeepdevelopingthetechnologythatallowsustouselessoilinourcarsandtrucks;@#@inourbuildingsandplants.That’sthestrategywe’repursuing,andthat’stheonlyrealsolutiontothischallenge.Now,weabsolutelyneedsafe,responsibleoilproductionhereinAmerica.That’swhyundermyAdministration,Americaisproducingmoreoiltodaythanatanytimeinthelasteightyears.In2010,ourdependenceonforeignoilwasunder50%forthefirsttimeinmorethanadecade.Andwhiletherearenoshort-termsilverbulletswhenitcomestogasprices,I’vedirectedmyadministrationtolookforeverysingleareawherewecanmakeanimpactandhelpconsumersinthemonthsahead,frompermittingtodeliverybottleneckstowhat’sgoingonintheoilmarkets.Butoverthelongterm,anall-of-the-aboveenergystrategymeanswehavetodomore.Itmeanswehavetomakesomechoices.@#@Here’soneexample.Rightnow,fourbillionofyourtaxdollarssubsidizetheoilindustryeveryyear.Fourbilliondollars.Imaginethat.Maybesomeofyouarelisteningtothisinyourcarrightnow,pullingintoagasstationtofillup.Asyouwatchthosenumbersrise,knowthatoilcompanyprofitshaveneverbeenhigher.Yetsomehow,Congressisstillgivingthosesamecompaniesanotherfourbilliondollarsofyourmoney.That’soutrageous.It’sinexcusable.Andithastostop.@#@Acenturyofsubsidiestotheoilcompaniesislongenough.It’stimetoendtaxpayergiveawaystoanindustrythat’sneverbeenmoreprofitable,andusethatmoneytoreduceourdeficitanddouble-downonacleanenergyindustrythat’sneverbeenmorepromising.Becauseoftheinvestmentswe’vealreadymade,theuseofwindandsolarenergyinthiscountryhasnearlydoubled–andthousandsofAmericanshavejobsbecauseofit.Andbecauseweputinplacethetoughestfueleconomystandardsinhistory,ourcarswillaveragenearly55milespergallonbythemiddleofthenextdecade–somethingthat,overtime,willsavethetypicalfamilymorethan$8,000atthepump.NowCongressneedstokeepthatmomentumgoingbyrenewingthecleanenergytaxcreditsthatwillleadtomorejobsandlessdependenceonforeignoil.Look,weknowthere’snosilverbulletthatwillbringdowngaspricesorreduceourdependenceonforeignoilovernight.Butwhatwecandoisgetourprioritiesstraight,andmakeasustained,seriousefforttotacklethisproblem.That’sthecommitmentweneedrightnow.Andwithyourhelp,it’sacommitmentwecanmake.Thankyou.@#@20120218@#@Hello,everybody.I’mspeakingtoyouthisweekfromtheBoeingPlantinEverett,Washington.Boeinghasbeeninthiscommunityforhalfacentury.Butit’swhatthey’redoingheretodaythathasfolksreallyexcited;@#@becauseatthisplantthey’rebuildingtheplaneofthefuture–theDreamliner.It’sanimpressivesight.And,tobehonest,partofwhyIcamewastoseeitupclose.ButIalsocamebecausethisisagreatexampleofhowwecanbringjobsandmanufacturingbacktoAmerica.Yousee,thelastfewdecadeshaven’tbeeneasyformanufacturinginthiscountry.Newtechnologyhasmadebusinessesmoreefficientandproductive–andthat’sgood–butit’salsomadealotofjobsobsolete.Theresulthasbeenpainfulforalotoffamiliesandcommunities.Factorieswherepeoplethoughtthey’dretirehavelefttown.Jobsthatprovidedadecentlivinghavebeenshippedoverseas.Andthehardtruthisthatalotofthosejobsaren’tcomingback.Butthatdoesn’tmeanwehavetosettleforalesserfuture.Idon’tacceptthatidea.InAmerica,there’salwayssomethingwecandotocreatenewjobsandnewmanufacturingandnewsecurityforthemiddle-class.InAmerica,wedon’tgiveup,wegetup.Rightnow,that’sexactlywhatwe’redoing.Overthepast23months,businesseshavecreated3.7millionnewjobs.Andmanufacturersarehiringforthefirsttimesincethe1990s.It’snowgettingmoreexpensivetodobusinessinplaceslikeChina.Meanwhile,Americaismoreproductivethanever.AndcompanieslikeBoeingarerealizingthatevenwhenwecan’tmakethingscheaperthanChina,wecanmakethingsbetter.That’showwe’regoingtocompeteglobally.ForBoeing,businessrightnowisbooming.Lastyear,ordersforcommercialaircraftrosebymorethan50percent.Tomeetthatrisingdemand,they’veputthousandsoffolkstoworkalloverthecountry.Wewanttoseemoreofthis.WeneedtomakeitaseasyaswecanforourcompaniestocreatemorejobsinAmerica,notoverseas.Andthatstartswithourtaxcode.Nocompanyshouldgetataxbreakforoutsourcingjobs.Instead,taxbreaksshouldgotomanufacturerswhosetupshophereathome.Biggertaxbreaksshouldgotohigh-techmanufacturerswhocreatethejobsofthefuture.Andifyourelocateyourcompanytoastrugglingcommunity,youshouldgethelpfinancingthatnewplant,thatnewequipment,ortrainingfornewworkers.It’stimetostoprewardingbusinessesthatshipjobsoverseas,andstartrewardingbusinessesthatcreatejobshereinAmerica.AndCongressshouldsendmethatkindoftaxreformrightaway.Anotherthingwe’redoingistomakeiteasierforcompanieslikeBoeingtoselltheirproductsallovertheworld,becausemoreexportsmeanmorejobs.Twoyearsago,IsetagoalofdoublingU.S.exportsoverfiveyears.Andwe’reontracktomeetthatgoal–aheadofschedule.Wehaveabigopportunityrightnowtobuildnotonlyaneconomythatwillhelpussucceedtoday,butaneconomythatwillhelpourkidsandtheirkidssucceedtomorrow.Weknowwhatweneedtodo.WeneedtostrengthenAmericanmanufacturing.WeneedtoinvestinAmerican-madeenergyandnewskillsforAmericanworkers.Andaboveall,weneedtorenewthevaluesthathavealwaysmadethiscountrygreat:
@#@Hardwork.Fairplay.Sharedresponsibility.Wecandothis.AskthefolksinEverett.Righthere,afewyearsago,thefirstDreamlinertookoffonitsmaidentrip.Thousandsofemployeescametowatch.OnewasanexecutiveofficeadministratornamedSharonO’Hara.AsSharonsawthatfirstplanetakeflight–aresultofsomuchhardwork–shegotgoosebumps.Inherwords,shesaid,“Wesaidwewoulddoitandwedid.”That’sthestoryofAmerica.Wesaidwewoulddoit,andwedid.That’sthecan-dospiritthatmakesuswhoweare.We’veseenchallengingtimesbefore.Butwealwaysemergefromthemstronger.Andthat’swhatwe’regoingtodoagaintoday.Thanks,andhaveagreatweekend.@#@20120211@#@Hello,everybody.Inrecentweeks,we’veseensignsthatoureconomyisgrowingstrongerandcreatingjobsatafasterclip.Whilenumbersandfigureswillgoupanddowninthecomingmonths,whatcannotwaverisourresolvetodoeverythinginourpowertokeepstokingthefiresoftherecovery.AndthelastthingweshoulddoisletWashingtonstandintheway.Yousee,attheendofthemonth,taxesaresettogoupon160millionworkingAmericans.Ifyou’reoneofthem,thenyouknowbetterthananyonethatthelastthingyouneedrightnowisataxhike.ButifCongressrefusestoact,middleclasstaxeswillgoup.It’sthatsimple.@#@Now,ifthissoundsfamiliar,it’sbecausewe’vebeenherebefore.BackinDecember,Congressfacedthisexactsamepredicament.Ultimately,thankstoyourvoices,theydidtherightthing–butonlyafteragreatdealofbickeringandpoliticalposturingthatputthestrengthofoureconomyandthesecurityofmiddleclassfamiliesatrisk.Wecan’tgothroughthatagain.Congressneedstostopthismiddleclasstaxhikefromhappening.Period.Nodrama.Nodelay.Andnoideologicalsideissuesthathavenothingtodowiththistaxcut.Nowisnotthetimeforself-inflictedwoundstoourrecovery.Nowisthetimeforcommon-senseaction.Andthistaxcutiscommon-sense.Ifyou’reafamilymakingabout$50,000ayear,thistaxcutamountstoabout$1,000ayear.That’sabout$40ineverypaycheck.Iknowtherearesomefolksinthistownwhothink$40isn’talotofmoney.Buttoastudentoraseniorwho’stryingtostretchthebudgetalittlebitfurther?
