NotlongagotherelivedinuptownNewYork,inasmallalmostmeagerroom,thoughcrowdedwithbooks,LeoFinkle,arabbinicalstudentintheYeshivahUniversity.Finkle,aftersixyearsofstudy,wastobeordainedinJuneandhadbeenadvisedbyanacquaintancethathemightfinditeasiertowinhimselfacongregationifheweremarried.Sincehehadnopresentprospectsofmarriage,aftertwotormenteddaysofturningitoverinhismind,hecalledinPinyeSalzman,amarriagebrokerwhosetwo—lineadvertisementhehadreadintheForward.
Thematchmakerappearedonenightoutofthedarkfourth—floorhallwayofthegraystone
roominghousewhereFinklelived,graspingablack,strappedportfoliothathadbeenwornthinwithuse.Salzman,whohadbeenlonginthebusiness,wasofslightbutdignifiedbuild,wearinganoldhat,andanovercoattooshortandtightforhim.Hesmelledfranklyoffish,whichhelovedtoeat,andalthoughhewasmissingafewteeth,hispresencewasnotdispleasing,becauseofanamiablemannercuriouslycontrastedwithmournfuleyes.Hisvoice,hislips,hiswispofbeard,hisbonyfingerswereanimated,butgivehimamomentofreposeandhismildblueeyesrevealedadepthofsadness,acharacteristicthatputLeoalittleateasealthoughthesituation,forhim,wasinherentlytense.
HeatonceinformedSalzmanwhyhehadaskedhimtocome,explainingthathishomewasinCleveland,andthatbutforhisparents,whohadmarriedcomparativelylateinlife,hewasaloneintheworld.Hehadforsixyearsdevotedhimselfalmostentirelytohisstudies,asaresultofwhich,understandably,hehadfoundhimselfwithouttimeforasociallifeandthecompanyofyoungwomen.Thereforehethoughtitthebetterpartoftrialanderror—ofembarrassingfumbling----tocallinanexperiencedpersontoadvisehimonthesematters.Heremarkedinpassingthatthefunctionofthemarriagebrokerwasancientandhonorable,highlyapprovedintheJewishcommunity,becauseitmadepracticalthenecessarywithouthinderingjoy.Moreover,hisownparentshadbeenbroughttogetherbyamatchmaker.Theyhadmade,ifnotafinanciallyprofitablemarriage—sinceneitherhadpossessedanyworldlygoodstospeakof----atleastasuccessfuloneinthesenseoftheireverlastingdevotiontoeachother.Salzmanlistenedinembarrassedsurprise,sensingasortofapology.Later,however,heexperiencedaglowofprideinhiswork,anemotionthathadlefthimyearsago,andheheartilyapprovedofFinkle.
Thetwowenttotheirbusiness.LeohadledSalzmantotheonlyclearplaceintheroom,atablenearawindowthatoverlookedthelamp—litcity.Heseatedhimselfatthematchmakersidebutfacinghim,attemptingbyanactofwilltosuppresstheunpleasanttickleinhisthroat.Salzmaneagerlyunstrappedhisportfolioandremovedalooserubberbandfromathinpacketofmuch-handledcards.Asheflippedthroughthem,agestureandsoundthatphysicallyhurtLeo,thestudentpretendednottoseeandgazedsteadfastlyoutthewindow.Although
itwasstillFebruary,winterwasonitslastlegs,signsofwhichhehadforthefirsttimeinyearsbeguntonotice.Henowobservedtheroundwhitemoonmovinghighintheskythroughacloudmenagerie,andwatchedwithhalf-openmouthasitpenetratedahugehen,anddroppedoutofherlikeanegglayingitself.Salzman,thoughpretendingthrougheye-glasseshehadjustslippedon,tobeengagedinscanningthewritingonthecards,stoleoccasionalglancesattheyoungman'
sdistinguishedface,notingwithpleasurethelongseverescholar’snose,browneyesheavywithlearning,sensitiveyetascetic1ips'
andacertainalmosthollowqualityofthedarkcheeks.Hegazedaroundatshelvesuponshelvesofbooksandletoutasoft,contentedsigh.
WhenLeo’seyesfelluponthecards,hecountedsixspreadoutinSalzman'

Leoblushedatthis,regrettingallhehadrevealedofhimselfinacurriculumvitaehehadsenttoSalzman.Hehadthoughtitbesttoacquainthimwithhisstrictstandardsandspecifications,butinhavingdoneso,felthehadtoldthemarriagebrokermorethanwasabsolutelynecessary.
Hehesitantlyinquired,”Doyoukeepphotographsofyourclientsonfile?

“Firstcomesfamily,amountofdowry,alsowhatkindpromises,”Salzmanreplied,unbuttoninghistightcoatandsettlinghimselfinthechair.Aftercomespictures,rabbi.”

Salzmansaidhewould,butinsteadcalledhimdoctor,whichhechangedtorabbiwhenLeowasnotlisteningtooattentively..
Salzmanadjustedhishorn-rimmedspectacles,gentlyclearedhisthroatandreadinaneagervoicethecontentsofthetopcard:

Salzmanhunchedhisshouldersinanalmostimperceptiblegestureofdisappointment.Heplacedthecarddownonthewoodentableandbegantoreadanother:
