专四模拟试题(阅读篇47)附答案详解
College costs vary quite a bit, depending upon the typeof school attended. For example, at many of the moreexpensive private schools, annual costs (including tuition, room, board, books, travel to and from home, and other expenses)may ex ceed $20,000. Of course, public universities are muchcheaper. At these schools, tuition is significantly higher foroutofstate students than it is for thos e whose permanentresidence is within that state. Tuition at community colleges averages about half the instate cost of public, fouryear colleges and universi ties.
For those that cannot afford the cost of a college education, financial aid is t he answer.Students in the U.S.A. receive about $20 billion per year in financia l aid. In recent years, nearly75% of students in postsecondary programs have be en receiving some form of financial aid. There are three main types of financial aid:
(a) scholarships(grants), which are gifts that studentsdo not repay;(b) loans to students and/or their parents; and (c) studentemployment(work/study), a parttime job which the school gives the student for the academicyear. Most financial aid is needbased; that is, only students who need the money receive i t .Financial assistance to outstanding students who do not need the money (common ly calledmeritbased aid) is limited.
The funds for all of this aid come from three main sourcesthe federal governme n t, stategovernments, and private contributions. Every American college and univ ersity has a financial aidoffice to help students find out what kind of aid the y might be qualified to get and to assist them incompleting the complicated app lication forms. Aliens who are permanent residents in the U.S.A.are qualified t o receive government assistance, but foreign students (I-20 visa students) are not.
1. A student may pay the least tuition if he studies ______.
A. at a community college within his own state
B. at a public university
C. within his own state
D. at a four year college
2. Financial aid is largely given to those who ______.
A. study well B. need money
C. cannot repay D. lose their jobs
3. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?
A. Foreign students, if they are permanent residents in the U.S. can rec eive governmentassistance.
B. Foreign students with I-20 visa cannot receive government assistance.
C. More students can receive scholarships than other types of financial aid.
D. Students in financial difficulty can receive assistance.
4. The main theme of the passage is ______.
A. the high college costs in the U.S.
B. how to get financial aid in a college
C. American higher education
D. college costs and financial aid
After the violent earthquake that shook Los Angeles in1994, earthqua ke scientists had good news to report:
thedamage and death toll could have been much worse.
More than 60 people died in this earthquake. By comparison,an earthquake of sim ilar intensity that shook America in 1988claimed 25,000 victims.
Injuries and deaths were relatively less in Los Angelesbecause the quake occurred at 4:
31 a.m. on a holiday, whentraffic was light on the city’s highways. In addition, changes made to the constrction codes in LosAngeles during the last 20 years have strengthened the city’s buildings and highways, makingthem more re sistant to quakes.
Despite the good news, civil engineers aren’t resting on their successness. Pinned to theirdrawing boards are blueprints for improved quakeresistant building s . The new designs shouldoffer even greater security to cities where earthquakes often take place.
In the past, making structures quakeresistant meant firm yet flexible material s , such as steeland wood, that bend without breaking. Later, people tried to lif t a building off its foundation, andinsert rubber and steel between the buildin g and its foundation to reduce the impact of groundvibrations. The most recent designs give buildings brains as well as concrete and steel supports.Called sma rt buildings, the structures respond like living organisms to an earthquake’s vib ration. When the ground shakes and the building tips forward, the computer would force the building toshift in the opposite direction.
The new smart structures could be very expensive to build. However, they would s ave manylives and would be less likely to be damaged during earthquakes.
1. The function of the computer mentioned in the passage is to ______.
A. counterbalance an earthquake’s action on the building
B. predict the coming of an earthquake with accuracy
C. help strengthen the foundation of the building
D. measure the impact of an earthquake’s vibrations
2. The smart buildings discussed in the passage ______
A. would cause serious financial problems
B. would be worthwhile though costly
C. would increase the complexity of architectural design
D. can reduce the ground vibrations caused by earthquakes
3. It can be inferred from the passage that in minimizing the damage cau sed by earthquakesattention should be focused on ______.
A. the increasing use of rubber and steel in capital construction
B. the development of flexible building materials
C. the reduction of the impact of ground vibrations
D. early forecasts of earthquakes
4. The author’s main purpose in writing the passage is to ___ ___.
A. compare the consequences of the earthquakes that occurred in the U.S
B. encourage civil engineers to make more extensive use of computers
C. outline the history of the development of quakeresistant building materials
D. report new developments in constructing quakeresistant buildings
Three English dictionaries published recently all lay claimto possessing a “ne w” feature. The BBC English Dictionarycontains background information on 1,000 people and placesprominent in the news since 1988; the Oxford AdvancedLearner ’s Dictionary:
Encyclopedic Edition is the OALD plusencyclopedic entries; the L ongman Dictionary of EnglishLanguage and Culture is the LDOCE plus cultural inf ormation.
The key fact is that all three dictionaries can be seen tohave a distinctly “c ultural” as well as language learning content. That being said, the way in whic hthey approach the cultural element is not identical, making direct comparisons between the threedifficult.
While there is some common ground between the encyclopedic/cultural entries for theOxford and Longman dictionaries, there is a clear difference. Oxford lays cl aim to beingencyclopedic on content whereas Longman distinctly concentrates on the language and culture ofthe Englishspeaking world. The Oxford dictionary c an therefore stand more vigorous scrutinyfor cultural bias than the Longman pub lication because the latter does not hesitate about viewingthe rest of the worl d from the cultural perspectives of the Englishspeaking world. The cultural objectives of the BBC dictionary are in turn more distinct still. Based on an anal ysis of over 70 millionwords recorded from the BBC World Service and National P ublic Radio of Washington over aperiod of four years, their 1,000 brief encyclo pedic entries are based on people and places thathave featured in the news rece ntly. The intended user they have in mind is a regular listener to theWorld Ser vice who will have a reasonable standard of English and a developed skill in list eningcomprehension.
In reality, though, the BBC dictionary will be purchased by a far wider range of languagelearners, as will the other two dictionaries. We will be faced with a situation where many of the usersof these dictionaries will at the very least h ave distinct sociocultural perspectives and may haveworld views which are tot ally opposed and even hostile to those of the West. Advanced learnersform this kind of background will not only evaluate a dictionary on how userfriendly it is but willalso have definite views about the scope and appropriateness of the various socioculturalentries.
1. What feature sets apart the three dictionaries discussed in the passa
ge from traditional ones?
A. The combination of two dictionaries into one.
B. The new approach to defining words.
C. The inclusion of cultural content.
D. The increase in the number of entries.
2. The Longman dictionary is more likely to be criticized for cultural p
rejudice because ______.
A. its scope of cultural entries goes beyond the culture of the Englishs
peaking world
B. it pays little attention to the cultural content of the nonEnglishspeakin
g countries
C. it views the world purely from the standpoint of the Englishspeaking people
D. it fails to distinguish language from culture in its encyclopedic entries
3. It is implied in the last paragraph that, in approaching sociocultu
ral content in a dictionary, social thought should be given to ______.
A. the language levels of its users
B. the number of its prospective purchasers
C. the different tastes of its users
D. the various c
