PrimeMinisterSingh,Mrs.GursharanKaur,membersoftheIndiandelegation1(代表团)--onbehalfof(代表,为了)Michelleandmyself,itisagreatpleasuretowelcomeyoutotheWhiteHouse. OnbehalfoftheAmericanpeople,itismygreathonortowelcomeyoutotheUnitedStates.
Mr.PrimeMinister,yoursisthefirstofficialstatevisitofmypresidency2,anditisfittingthatyouandIndiabesorecognized. (Applause.) Thisvisitreflectsthehighesteem3(尊重)inwhichIandtheAmericanpeopleholdyourwiseleadership. Itreflectstheabiding4(永久的,持久的)bondsofrespectandfriendshipbetweenourpeople,includingourfriendsintheIndianAmericancommunitywhojoinusheretoday.
Butaboveall,yourvisit,atthispivotalmoment(紧要关头)inhistory,speakstotheopportunitybeforeus--tobuildtherelationshipbetweenournations,borninthelastcentury,intooneofthedefiningpartnerships6ofthe21stcentury.
Forwhileourtwonationshavetakendifferentpathstoreachthismoment,oursisacommonstory. It'sthestoryoftwoproudpeoplewhostruggledtobreakfreefromanempireanddeclaretheirindependence. Twoboldexperimentsindemocracywithconstitutionsthatbeginwiththesamesimplewords:
"Wethepeople." Twogreatrepublicsdedicated7totheidealsofliberty,justice,equality,andthenever-endingworkofperfectingtheirunion.
It'sthestoryoftwoeconomicmarvels8(奇迹)fueledbyanethic9(道德标准,伦理)ofhardworkandinnovation. Andtoday,ournationsaretwogloballeaders,drivennottodominate(统治)othernationsbuttobuildafutureofsecurityandprosperityforallnations.
Mr.PrimeMinister,asweworktobuildthatfuture,Indiaisindispensable.
Asleadingeconomies,theUnitedStatesandIndiacanstrengthentheglobaleconomicrecovery,promotetradethatcreatesjobsforbothourpeople,andpursuegrowththatisbalancedandsustained(持久的).
Asnuclearpowers,wecanbefullpartnersinpreventingthespreadoftheworld'smostdeadlyweapons,securingloosenuclearmaterialsfromterrorists,andpursuingoursharedvisionofaworldwithoutnuclearweapons.
Aspeoplewho'veknownthepainandanguish10(苦闷,痛苦)ofterrorism,wecanstandtogether--cooperatingtopreventfutureattacks,andpromotethedevelopmentandprosperitythatundermines(渐渐破坏)violentextremism.
AsIndiabecomesanincreasinglyinfluential11globalpower,wecanpartnertomeetothertransnationalchallenges:
developingcleanenergypartnerships,confrontingclimatechange,stoppinginfectiousdisease(传染病),reducinghungerandworkingtoendextremepovertyinourtime.
Andastheworld'slargestdemocracies,wecankeepfaithwithourcommonvalues--speakingoutandstanding12upfortherightsanddignitytowhichallhumanbeingsareentitled;andshowingthatnationsthatrespecttherightsandaspirations13oftheirpeopleareultimatelymorestable,moresecureandmoresuccessful.
ThisistheIndiathatAmericawelcomestoday--aleaderinAsiaandaroundtheworld. (Applause.) Thesearethechallengeswearesummonedtomeetinpartnership5. Thisistheprogressthatispossible--todayandinthedaysandyearsahead.
And,Mr.PrimeMinister,aswebuildourcommonfuture,wecandrawstrengthfromoursharedpast. Foritwasexactly60yearsago,inaceremonynotunlikethis,thatanAmericanpresidentwelcomedtotheWhiteHousethefirstprimeministerofanindependentIndia. Andwhilethedecadesthatfollowedwerenotwithouttheirchallenges,thespiritofthatfirstvisitiswithustoday--thesamesenseofpossibility,thesamehopeforthefuture.
SoasPresidentTrumansaidofPresidentNehru,itismyprivilegetowelcome"therespectedleaderofagreatnationoffreepeople."
AndasPrimeMinisterNehrusaidoftheworkbeforethem,mayourtwogreatnations"findmanywaysofworkingtogetherinfriendlyandfruitfulcooperationtoourmutual14advantage,andforthegoodofhumanity."

Mr.President,IbringtoyouandthepeopleoftheUnitedStatesofAmericathefriendlygreetingsofouronebillionpeopleofIndia. (Applause.)
IndiaandAmericaareseparatedbydistance,butboundtogetherbythevaluesofdemocracy,pluralism,ruleoflaw,andrespectforfundamentalhumanfreedoms. Overtheyears,wehavebuiltuponthesevaluesandcreatedapartnershipthatisbaseduponbothprincipleandpragmatism. Ourrelationshavebeentransformed,andtodaytheyencompass15cooperationinallareasofhumanactivity.
Mr.President,I'vecometodaytobuilduponthesesuccessesandtostrengthenourmultifacetedrelationship. Weseektobroadenanddeepenourstrategicpartnership,andtoworkwiththeUnitedStatestomeetthesechallengesofafast-changingworldinthis21stcentury. (Applause.)
Thisisamomentofgreatopportunityinourrelationship. IndiaandtheUnitedStatescan,andmust,worktogethertoharnesstheimmensepotentialofourtalentedandenterprisingpeople,andsupporteachother'sgrowthandprosperity. Weshouldcooperateinaddressingglobalchallengesofcombatingterrorism,makingourenvironmentcleanerandmovingtowardsaworldfreeofnuclearweapons. (Applause.)
