Abstract
Inrecentyears,therelationshipbetweengraphicdesignandvisuals(GDV)hasbecomeasourceofdebateforresearchers.Humanbeingsaresymbolicallyinnovative;
theyreacttotheirenvironmentbycreatingdevicesthatwillassisttheminadaptingtothenumerousproblemsofcommu-nication.Thisreactiontoenvironmentalinfluenceledtothedevelopmentofdifferentdeviceswhichareproblemsolvingtechnologiesintheirrecurrentactivities.Thespringingup,andadvancementofgraphic
designdevicesinInformationTechnologiesandCommunication,broughtseriesofbenefitsandrelieftomankind.ModernmanexistsinanerainwhichtechnologicalinnovationanddevicesaredominatingtheaccomplishmentsofhumanendeavourandthesupersonicageofInformationTechnologyexplosioningraphicdesigncommunicationwhichhasmadelifemuchmoremeaningful.Newinnovationsandmethodologiesareappliedingraphiccommunicationvisualsystemindisseminatinginformationtotheaudience.Thispaper,surveystheimpactandtheroleofgraphicvisualscommunication.Inculturaldevelopments.Keywords:

1Introduction
Theconcept‘graphicdesignvisuals’(GDV)withinthecontextofthispaperisdefinedasatool,systemortechniquewhichhastheabilitytocollect,store,display,transmit,receiveorabsorbmessagesovershortorlongdistancevisually(Akinyokun1999).Fromtheabove,wearereferringtotheembodimentsofaconvergenceofinterestbetweengraphicscommunicationvisualsandtelecommunicationallofwhichareleadingtotherapiddevelopmentofmicroelectronicsorganizationsingraphicartanddesigning.Ogunsote(1990)classifiesittobethebroadrangeofInformationTechnologiesassociatedwithvisualtelecommunicationsystemsandautomationrobots,laboratorytestingofcertainequipments
andmanybasicelectroniccontrolledtechnologiesingraphics.GraphicdesignvisualistheprocessoftransmittingamessagefromasourcetoareceiverasGerbnerpostulatesinHoban(1974)thatthecultivationhypothesisformassgraphicdesigncommunicationstatesthatmessagesandmessagesystemscultivatepriorities,valuesandpatternofperceptionand,expectationsinestablishingrealityvisually.Forinstance,graphicdesignvisualsarerelativelymorestableinformationcontentthatcanbesubjectedtovariedperceptionorinterpretationspartlyduetoexperienceandabilitylevelofindividualslisteningandwatchinginlearningsystem.Oneargumentthatshouldberesolvedinemphasizinggraphicdesignvisualsthatcouldserveasstimulifortechnologicaltrendsinculturaldevelopmentisthatagenerallevelofartisticanddesigningliteracywhichshouldbeachieved.Artisticanddesigningliteracyinthescopeofthisstudyisbroadlytheabilitytoencodeanddecodevisualsymbolsingraphicdesignandcommunication.Thereisaneed,therefore,forgraphicdesignerstodevelopanawarenessofvisualmeaningthataudiencecaninterpretonthebasisofwhattheencoderselectsandstresses.Thiswillcontributeimmenselytosocialandeconomicimprove-mentsuchascommunicationtechnologyproductivity,increasingaccesstoahigherqualityoflife,incorporatesvisualtechnologiesandtechniquesusedinmanaginginformation.
2RoleofGraphicVisualsinCommunicationinTechnologicalAge
Theroleofgraphicdesignsinvisualcommunicationfindsexpressioninpeople’spropensitytomeettheirneedsinthecontextoftheircommunitiesandinaccordancewiththeirlifestylesandculturalbackground.Therolesofgraphicvisualsincommunicationarepredominantdespitethemoderatingeffectofeconomicclimateandtechnologynow.Graphicvisualcommunicationasthenamesuggests,iscommunicationthroughvisualaid.Itistheconveyanceofideasandinformationthatcanbereadorlookedupon.Primarilyassociatedwithtwodimensionalimages,itincludessigns,typography,drawing,graphicdesign,illustration,colourandelectronicresources.Itreliessolelyonvision.Itisaformofcommunicationwithvisualeffectanditexplorestheideathatavisualmessagewithtexthasagreaterpowertoinform,educateorpersuadeaperson.Itisclassifiedascommunicationbypresentinginformationthroughvisualforms.Someoftherolesofgraphicdesignsinvisualcommunicationaretheevaluationofagoodvisualdesignwhichisbasedonmeasuringcomprehensionbytheaudience,notonaestheticorartisticpreferencebecausetherearenouniversallyagreedprinciplesofbeautyanduglinessindesign.Intheroleofgraphicdesignsinvisualcommunication,thereexistsavarietyofwaystopresentinformationusuallyinformofgestures,bodylanguages,videoandtelevision.Here,focusisonthepresentationoftext,pictures,diagrams,photos,andet-cetera.Recentresearchinthisfieldhasfocusedonwebdesigningandgraphicallyorientedusability.GraphicVisualsin
thissenseisthekeytodevelopmentintechnologicalageanditisperceivedasacquisitionofbothphysicalandintellectualskillsaswellastheacquisitionofobjectiveviewoftheculturaldevelopment.Technologicalageasfarasthisstudyisconcernistheapplicationofscienceandthedevelop-mentofmanualskillsindesignandtheapplicationoftechnicaladvances.Theabovestatementissayingthattechnologyinculturaldevelopmentimpliesbasicscientificandculturalknowledge,whichismadeupofbasiccomponentsofdesignstructuresandproductionmechanisms.Theproductoftechnologycanbefoundinthephilosophyofvisualdesignperceptionthatseekstounderstandappreciativedesigncomponentsandprinciplesinvisualformanditsapplicationinlogicscience,throughcomparativestudiesoftraditionalandmoderndesignvisuals,formsandobjects.3GraphicsCommunicationaMeansofCulturalDevelopmentGraphicCommunication,asthenamesuggestsisthecommunicationthatusesgraphicelements.Theseelementsincludesymbolssuchasglyphsandicons,imagessuchasdrawings,and,photographs,itincludethepassivecontributionsofsuitablecolorandsurroundings.Itistheprocessofcreating,producinganddistributingmaterials,incorporatingwordsandimagestoconveydataconceptsandemotions.Thefieldofgraphiccommunicationencompassesallphasesofthegraphiccommunicationprocessesfromoriginationofideas(design,layoutandtypography)throughreproduction,finishinganddistributionof
twoorthree-dimensionalproductsorelectronictransmissions.Theearliestgraphicsknowntoanthropologistsstudyinprehistoricperiodsarecavepaintingsandmarkingsonboulders,bone,ivoryandantlers,whichwerecreatedduringtheupperPaleolithicperiodfrom40,000–10,000BCorearlier.Manyofthesewerefoundtorecordastronomical,seasonalandchronologicaldetails.Someoftheearliestgraphicsanddrawingsknowntothemodernworldfromalmost6,000yearsagowerethatofengravedstonetabletsandceramicsperiodofdevelopmentandcommunicationeraofculturaldevelopment.Thekeepingofrecordsforaccountingandinventorypurposewasamongthecommunicationoftheculturaldevelopmentofthosedays.Forinstance,recordsfromEgyptpredatetheseandpapyruswasusedbytheEgyptiansasamaterialonwhichtoplanthebuildingofpyramids.FromEgyptian,culturalcommunicationanddevelopmentswingsup.TheGreekintroducedasystemofcommunicationdevelopmentintheirownculturalbackgroundbyintroducingslabsoflimestoneandwood.From600–250BC,theGreeksplayedamajorroleingeometry.TheyusedgraphicstorepresenttheirmathematicaltheoriessuchastheCircletheoremandthePythagorastheoremwhichareinusetilldateinscienceandtechnology.Graphicdesignsand,communicationfunctionsinmultifariouswaysinculturaldevelopment.Inthisfunctionalsense,graphicdesignprogramsaredesignedtocorrespondtofundamentalhumanneeds,theneedsofanindividual,agroupofpeopleandthesocial
lifeofthepeoplecollectivelyinculturaldevelopment.Graphicdesignsandcommunicationperformedthevirtualrolesofsecuringforpeopleasafeandsuccessfulparticipationintheirdailysociallife.FromthehistoricalpointofreferenceoftheGreekandEgyptians,thetraditionalAfricansocieties,butthisisequallytrueofothersocietiesoftheworld.Alsothroughgraphicdesign,recreationalactivitiesinvolvingadvertisement,models,music,dancinganddancersandacrobaticdisplayshaveemerged.Fromvastanthropologicalrecords,traditionalAfricangraphicartshavebeenusedbytraditionalpeopleinNigeriaforperformingthevitalrolesofsecuringforpeopleasafeandsuccessfulparticipationintheirdailysociallife.Thereisconsiderableliteracyevidencethatgraphicdesigncommunicationprovidessocialintegrationactingassymbolsofpoliticalpowerinmanyculturaldevelopments.Graphicdesignandcommunicationsymbolizesconceptsofpower,authorityandprestige(Thompson1972)andRadcliff(1968)explains,howinmanyAfricancountries,graphicdesignservesasameansofculturaldevelopment,inthesensethatitisthestrengthofthevillage,thedistrictorthekingdommeansofcommunication.GraphicdesignandcommunicationsymbolsinAfricaindicatethenumerouslegendsoffolkloresoftheancestralorigin.Inalmostallofthesecases,literaryevidencesexplaincommonmoralisticphenomena,howgraphicdesignhasservedtoprovidesocial
