America’scitydwellersareamobilepeople.Thedecennialcensusesprovideddocumentationintheirredundantaccountsofrapidchangesandgrowthinmostofourgreatcities.Butstatisticalevidenceishardlyneeded.Thechangesinourcitieshaveoccurredsorapidlythattheperceptionofmobilityisanintegralpartofeveryurbandweller’sexperience.Hometownsaretransformedintheintervalsbetweenvisits.Theneighborhoodsofourchildhoodpresentalienappearancesandthelandmarksthatanchoredourmemorieshavedisappeared.
Howdothesedramaticchangesinresidentialareascomeabout?
Inpart,industryandcommerceintheirexpansionencroachuponlandusedforresidences.But,inlargerpart,thechangesaremassmovementsoffamilies—theendresultsofcountlessthousandsofresidenceshiftsmadebytheurbanAmericanseveryyear.Compoundedinthemass,theresidenceshiftsofurbanhouseholdsproducemostofthechangeandfluxofurbanpopulationstructures.
Someofthemobilityisanexpressionofthegrowthofourpopulation.Everynewfamilystartedordinarilymeansanotherhouseholdformed.Butthemobilitythatoccursismuchgreaterthancanbeaccountedforonlybytheadditionofnewhouseholdstoourpopulation.Thehighlevelofmobilityimpliesthatestablishedhouseholdsareinvolvedinalarge-scalegameof“musicalchairs”inwhichhousingisexchangedfromtimetotime.
