ABSTRACT
WilliamMakepeaceThackerywasanoutstandingcriticalrealisticEnglishwriterinthe19thcentury,VanityFairwashisbest-knownmasterpiece.InChina,thetranslationofVanityFaircangobackasfarasthe1930s.Intheyearof1934,WuGuangjianstartedthetranslationandheused“浮华世界”asthenameofthenovel,However,thetranslationwasonlyapartoftheoriginalbasedonMaxHegbrig’sexcerptsfromVanityFair.Intheyear1957,YangBitranslatedthecompleteversionofVanityFairandentitledit“名利场”.OfalltheseChineseversions,YangBi’sversionisconsideredasthebestowingtoherfluentlanguage.Fromitsbirthin1957,YangBi’sversionofVanityFairhadreceivedalotofattentionanditwasconsideredas“oneofthemostexcellenttranslatednovelsinChina”(SunZhili,1996:
153).AlotofscholarshavewrittenhighlightsofYangBi’sversionfromdifferentperspectives.However,mostofthesestudieswhichareaboutcommentingVanityFairareconfinedtothelinguisticlevel,thetranslationfeatures,thetranslationstrategiesadoptedandthetranslationnorms,andtherehasbeenlittlediscussiononthetranslationofculture-loadedterms.
Therefore,theaimofthisthesisistoexplorethetranslationofculture-loadedwordsundertheguidanceofPolysystemTheory.TheauthoristocarryouttheanalysisundertheguidanceofPolysystemTheory.Atfirst,theauthoristoanalyzethestateofChineseliteratureinthe1950s.Basedontheanalysis,YangBi’stranslationstrategiesinthetranslationofculture-loadedwordsaretobediscussed,andfinallyitisconcludedthatYangBiappliesforeignizingstrategyinhertranslationofculture-loadedwords.ThethesisaimstotesttheapplicabilityofPolysystemTheoryinliteraltranslationsoastoofferanewinsightforliteraltranslation.

多元系统论视角下文化负载词的翻译研究—以杨必《名利场》为例
摘要
萨克雷(WilliamThackeray)是英国十九世纪的批判现实主义小说家,《名利场》(VanityFair)是他的成名作。
在我国,对《名利场》的译介最早可以追溯到20世纪三十年代。
1934年,伍光建根据赫次堡的节选本将小说译为《浮华世界》。
之后,国内又陆续出版了一些译本,其中以女翻译家杨必的译本最早得到读者和翻译界的认可。
虽然以杨必翻译的《名利场》为题的文章不计其数,但是这些文章大多数是围绕杨必的翻译风格、采取的翻译策略或遵循的翻译标准而展开,而对于杨必《名利场》译本中出现的文化负载词的研究至今几乎仍然是空白。
因此,本文试图在多元系统论的指导下,对杨必译本中的文化负载词翻译进行研究。
文中作者首先分析了二十世纪五十年代中国文化的现状,通过分析得出在当时的中国文学中翻译文学占据了中心位置,基于此分析,作者结合多元系统论对杨必在翻译文化负载词时所应用的翻译策略进行分析,通过分析得出杨必在翻译《名利场》中存在的文化负载词时基本采用了异化翻译的策略。
文章试图检验多元系统论在文学翻译中的适用性并为文学翻译的研究提供一个新的视角。

1.1TheBackgroundoftheStudy
Sincetheterm“culturalturn”ofTranslationStudies,whichwasproposedbySnell-Hornby,wasadvocatedbyBassnettandLefevere,theschoolofTranslationStudiesbegantocopewithtranslationproblemsfromtheirdifferentculturalperspectivesandformeddifferenttheoriesoftranslationstudies.Fromthenon,culturehasbecomeanindispensableelementwhendealingwithtranslationproblems.Withtherapiddevelopmentofeconomyandinformationtechnology,thewholeworldhasbeencloselyconnected,andthiscanbereflectedfromsuchanglesaspolitics,economyandculture.Itisknowntoallthatthelanguageofonecountryisthecarrierofitsculture,thedifferencesexistinginthecultureofdifferentcountriescanbefoundinlanguage.Vocabularyisthebasicelementsoflanguage,whichcarriesalargeamountofculturalinformationandcanreflectsocialandculturalfactors.Therefore,whenEnglishlearnerslearnoruseEnglish,theyshouldfocustheireyesightnotonlyonbasicelementsbutonculturalfactors.Itisthesamecasefortranslators,duringtheirtranslationprocessfromonelanguagetoanother,cultureistheimportantfactoronwhichtheymustputtheiremphasis,itisalsothemainelementthatcouldgreatlyaffecttheacceptabilityoftranslatedworksamongtarget-languagereaders.Asamatteroffact,languageandculturearecloselycorrelated,therefore,howtotransfertheuniqueculturalinformationtothetargetreadershasbecomeanimportantproblemtotranslators.Even-ZoharfirstputforwardPolysystemTheoryinhisseminalpaper“ThePositionofTranslatedLiteraturewithintheLiteraryPolysystem”(Even-Zohar,1990a),inwhichtwointerrelatedhypotheseshavebeenmade:
first,thatthepositionassumedbytranslatedliteratureintheliterarypolysystemtendstobeaperipheraloneexceptinthreespecialcases,andsecond,thattranslationtendstowardsacceptabilitywhenitisattheperiphery,andtowardsadequacywhenitisatthecenter(ChangNamfung,2007).UndertheguidanceofculturalnormsoftranslationandPolysystemTheory,translatingcultural-loadedwordsisbecomingmoreandmoreimportantbecauseitcanhelptopromotemutualunderstandingandcross-culturalexchanges.
However,inChinamanytranslationstudiesarestillconfinedtolinguisticlevel,stylisticlevelandsoon,fewtranslationscholarsputtheirfocusesonculturalelementswhenintroducingforeignliteraryworkstoChinesereaders.
Therearesomanylanguagesintheworld,andeachlanguagepossessesitspeculiarcharacteristicsandconcepts.Differentculturalhistorycanleadtoculturalgapbetweendifferentlanguage-users.Culturalgapistheconceptofwordsorexpressionsofonecountryfailingtofindtheirequivalentelementsinanothercountrybecauseofculturaldifferences.Someuniquewordsorexpressionsofdifferentcultureswillalsocausemisunderstandingincommunication.Ontheotherhand,asweallknow,EnglishfallsintototheIndo-EuropeanlanguagefamilywhileChinesetheSino-Tibetanfamily.ThuswhenEnglishliteraryworksareintroducedtoChinesereaders,eventhoughtheyaretranslatedsofluentlyatlinguisticlevel,butforthetranslationofsomeculturalterms,peculiartoitsculture,maymakeChinesereaderspuzzledowingtodifferentculturalbackground.ForChinesetranslators,itistheirinescapableresponsibilitytotranslateforeignliteraryworksfromtheperspectivebothlanguageandculture.However,duetotheuniqueculturalconnotationsofthoseculturaltermsexistinginforeignliteraryworks,theiraccuratetranslationposesaverydifficultproblemtotheChinesetranslators.
Inthispaper,theresearcherintendstodosometentativeresearchinthisfield.ThroughreviewingthehistoricalbackgroundoftheChineseversionofVanityFair,analyzingthestateofChineseliteratureandthepositionassumedbythetranslatedliteraturein1950s,theresearcheristoputforwardsomepracticalstrategiesindealingwiththetranslationofculture-loadedwords.TheseEnglishculture-loadedwordsandexpressionsarethedirectreflectionsoftheuniquefeaturesofE
