U.S.linguist(语言学家)StephenKrashenbelievesthatoutstandinglanguagelearnersjustworkharderatitandthentheyacquireunusuallystronglanguageability.Asanexample,hementionsaHungarianwomanwhoworkedasaninterpreterduringthe20thcentury.Whenshewas86,shecouldspeak16languagesandwasstillworkingonlearningnewlanguages.Shesaidshelearnedthemmostlyonherown,readingfictionorworkingthroughdictionariesortextbooks.
Someresearchersarguetothecontrary.Theybelievethatthereissuchathingasatalentforlearninglanguages.Inthe1930s,aGermanscientistexaminedpartsofthepreservedbrainofahyper-polyglotnamedEmilKrebs,whocouldspeak60languagesfluently.ThescientistfoundthattheareaofKrebs'braincalledBoca'sarea,whichisassociatedwithlanguage,lookeddifferentfromtheBoca'sareainthebrainsofmenwhospeakonlyonelanguage.However,westilldon'tknowifKrebswasbornwithabrainreadytolearndozensoflanguagesorifhisbrainadaptedtothedemandsheputonit.
Althoughitisstillnotclearwhethertheabilitytolearnmanylanguagesisborn,there'snodoubtthatjustaboutallofuscanacquireskillsinasecond,third,orevenfourthlanguagebyputtingourmindtoit.
