ButIalsoknowthatwecanhavecommonsensegunreformsthatkeepweaponsoutofthehandsofcriminalsandtheviolentlyunstable,whilerespectingresponsiblegunowners.
WhatIhopewithallofmyheartisthatweworktogethertomakethisdebatelesspolarized,lessinflamedbyideology,moreinformedbyevidence,sowecansitdownacrossthetable,acrosstheaislefromoneanother,andfindwaystokeepourcommunitiessafewhileprotectingconstitutionalrights.
ItmakesnosensethatbipartisanlegislationtorequireuniversalbackgroundcheckswouldfailinCongress,despiteoverwhelmingpublicsupport.
Itmakesnosensethatwewouldn'
tcometogethertokeepgunsoutofthehandsofdomesticabusers,orpeoplesufferingfrommentalillnesses,evenpeopleontheterroristwatchlist.Thatdoesn'
tmakesense,anditisarebuketothisnationweloveandcareabout.
ThePresidentisright:
Thepoliticsonthisissuehavebeenpoisoned.Butwecan'
tgiveup.Thestakesaretoohigh.Thecostsaretoodear.
AndIamnotandwillnotbeafraidtokeepfightingforcommonsensereforms,andalongwithyou,achievethoseonbehalfofallwhohavebeenlostbecauseofthissenselessgunviolenceinourcountry.
Buttoday,IstandbeforeyoubecauseIknowandyouknowthereisadeeperchallengeweface.
IhadthegreatprivilegeofrepresentingAmericaaroundtheworld.Iwassoproudtoshareourexample,ourdiversity,ouropenness,ourdevotiontohumanrightsandfreedom.Thesequalitieshavedrawngenerationsofimmigrantstoourshores,andtheyinspirepeoplestill.Ihaveseenitwithmyowneyes.
Andyet,bodiesareonceagainbeingcarriedoutofaBlackchurch.
Onceagain,racistrhetorichasmetastasizedintoracistviolence.
Now,it'
stempting,itistemptingtodismissatragedylikethisasanisolatedincident,tobelievethatintoday'
sAmerica,bigotryislargelybehindus,thatinstitutionalizedracismnolongerexists.
Butdespiteourbesteffortsandourhighesthopes,America'
slongstrugglewithraceisfarfromfinished.
Iknowthisisadifficulttopictotalkabout.IknowthatsomanyofushopedbyelectingourfirstBlackpresident,wehadturnedthepageonthischapterinourhistory.
Iknowtherearetruthswedon'
tliketosayoutloudordiscusswithourchildren.Butwehaveto.That'
stheonlywaywecanpossiblymoveforwardtogether.
RaceremainsadeepfaultlineinAmerica.Millionsofpeopleofcolorstillexperienceracismintheireverydaylives.
Herearesomefacts.
InAmericatoday,Blacksarenearlythreetimesaslikelyaswhitestobedeniedamortgage.
In2019,themedianwealthofBlackfamilieswasaround$11,000.Forwhitefamilies,itwasmorethan$134,000.
NearlyhalfofallBlackfamilieshavelivedinpoorneighborhoodsforatleasttwogenerations,comparedtojust7percentofwhitefamilies.
AfricanAmericanmenarefarmorelikelytobestoppedandsearchedbypolice,chargedwithcrimes,andsentencedtolongerprisontermsthanWhitemen,10percentlongerforthesamecrimesinthefederalsystem.
InAmericatoday,ourschoolsaremoresegregatedthantheywereinthe1960s.
