Insomeplaces,lakeshavebeenwarmingbyasmuchas0.10degreeCelsiusperyear.Atthatrate,alakemaywarmbyafulldegreeCelsius,or1.8degreesFahrenheit,injust10years.Thatdifferencemayseemsmall—youmightnotevennoticeitinyourbathtub.Butinalake,slightlywarmertemperaturescouldmeanmorealgae,andalgaecanmakethelakepoisonoustofish.
Thestudyshowsthatinsomeregions,lakesarewarmingfasterthantheairaroundthem.ThisisimportantbecausescientistsoftenusemeasurementsofairtemperaturetostudyhowtheEarthiswarming.Byusinglaketemperaturesaswell,scientistscangetabetterpictureofglobalwarming.Thescientistssaydataonlakesgivescientistsanewwaytomeasuretheimpactofclimatechangearoundtheworld.
