虽有诸多学者从女性主义入手分析小说《达洛卫夫人》,但大多着眼于女性地位、父权社会等传统角度,而从双性同体角度分析两性内心挣扎的评论却相对较少。
本文试图通过小说中各类角色间的性别关系,以及主线人物的对称性这两大角度分析双性同体意识觉醒时产生的心理苦痛,从而探索一战后两性的生存状态和身份认知,从女性心理层面观察现代女权运动,并丰富当代女性主义文学研究。

摘要:
虽然诸多女性主义研究者曾透过社会运动、父权压迫等多个视角对《达洛卫夫人》展开探讨,但文中双性同体的内心痛苦却未得到足够关注。
本文将通过文本分析法,从小说中角色间的关系,以及主线人物体现的对称性主题这两大角度分析两性在追求双性同体过程中面临的心理痛苦。
在此基础上,进一步探索一战后两性的自我意识和身份认知,从女性心理层面观察现代女权运动,从而丰富当代女性主义文学研究。

Abstract:
AsVirginiaWoolf’smasterpiece,Mrs.Dallowayholdsasignificantpositioninmodernistliterature.What’smore,itattractsmoreandmoreattentionsinliterarystudyofFeminism.Thoughmostofscholarshaveinterpretedthisnovelfromtheperspectiveofpatriarchyordiscrimination,IthinkthementaldilemmaofAndrogynousconsciousnessneedsmoreconcern.Thisthesis,applyingthemethodoftextanalysis,probesintotwomajoraspects:
genderrelationshipsamongcharactersandoppositionpresentedbyClarissaandSeptimus.Basedonsuchastudy,thisthesistriestoanalyzethepsychologicalagonyinthestruggleforAndrogynyinMrs.Dalloway.ItwillalsoinvestigategenderidentityandgenderrelationsafterWorldWar

VirginiaWoolfoccupiesasignificantplaceinliteraturehistory.Herexperimentsofmodernwritingtechniquesandherprobeintogenderrelationshipsmakegreatcontributionstomodernliteratureandfeminismstudy.
VirginiaWoolfwasborninKensington,London,onJanuary25th,1882.ShewasthedaughterofJuliaPrinsepDuckworthStephenandLeslieStephenwhowasarespectablescholar,criticandbiographerintheVictoriaAge.Family’sconnectionwithLondonliterarysocietyandeliteeducationathomemadeherinterestedinliterature.Later,thespiritofequalityandfreedomsharedbyBloomsburyGroupmemberspromotedherdevotiontoliteratureandencouragedhertowritenovels.Thoughinternationallyrenownedasaforerunnerofmodernliterature,Woolfwasallalonginaterriblementalstate.Shesufferedfromseveralseverementalbreakdowns,thelastofwhichcausedhersuicidewhenshewasonly59yearsold.HermajorworksincludenovelsJacob’sRoom,Mrs.Dalloway,TotheLighthouse,andOrlando,andabook-lengthessayARoomofOne’sOwn.
WoolfbegantowriteMrs.Dallowayin1922.WorldWar
witnessedthecollapseofBritishEmpire,leavingdeeppsychologicalscarsonitspeople.Britishsocietychangedineveryaspect.Duringthewar,theFeminismMovementachieveditsfirstpeak,inwhichwomenmainlyfoughtfortheirrightsinsuffrage.Asfortheauthorherself,Woolfwasgettingbetterfromherseverestmetalbreakdownin1915.Undersuchabackground,Mrs.Dalloway,publishedin1925,isoneofherbest-knownnovelforitssophisticatedconnotationanditsexperimentinwritingtechniques.WanderinginthestreetsofLondon,ClarissaDallowayispreparingasocialparty.RecollectingheraudaciousbutromanticloverPeterWalshwhodisturbshermindthroughanunexpectedmorningvisit,shebeginstocompareherhappybygoneandmeaninglesspresent.ShealsoquestionsherchoiceofmarryingthestableParliamentarianRichardDalloway.AcaraccidentconnectsClarissatohermalecounterpartSeptimusWarrenSmith,whoisafflictedwithmetalillnessfrom“shellshock”,afantasyofhisdeceasedwarcomradeandphysicianSirWilliamBradshaw’sprescriptionofconfinementtohospital.Clarissa’spartyisasuccessfulbutvacantone.Shemeetsalotofoldfriendbutfewofthemunderstandher.TheonlypersonshefeelsresonatedwithistheinsaneSeptimus,whosesuicideinspiresanepiphanyonher,sustainingherhopeforsurvival.
1.2VirginiaWoolfandAndrogyny
Androgynyisthecombinationofbothfeminineandmasculinecharacteristics(“Androgyny”).IthasalonghistorydeprivedfromAncientGreek.Plato’sSymposiumrecordsthatAristophanesthinks“thesexeswereoriginallythreeinnumber;therewasman,woman,andtheunionofthetwo”.Zeus,however,splitsthebisexualbodyintotwoparts,sofromthenontheyreducethepainofseparationbysex(15).InRomanpoetOvid’sMetamorphoses,anymphfallsinlovewithabeautifulyouthandasksgodstocombinethemasanandrogynousfusion(Shuwei197).EvenZeushimselfwhogivesbirthtoAthenaisanexampleofAndrogynyinCreationmyths.ProfessorZhouLeshiofShanghaiInternationalStudiesUniversitypointsoutthattheAndrogynousgodsreflectahistoricalperiodofsexlesswhichsuggestsanawarenessofgenderequalityinprimitivesociety(189).In1929,VirginiaWoolffirstputforwardtheliteraryconceptofAndrogynyinhermasterpieceARoomofone’sown.Shethinkstheidealcreationmustbeunderthebalanceofbinarygenderforce.LikeElaineShowaltersays,Woolf’sconceptofandrogynyisa“fullbalanceandcommandofanemotionalrangethatincludesmaleandfemaleelements”(265).Duringherwritingcareer,Woolfalwaysappliesthisliterarytheorytohercreationandcharacterization.Woolf’stheoryalsoinspiresitsChineseversionofbisexualharmonythatencouragesculturallymutualunderstandingandcomplementationbetweenmaleandfemalewriters(Dengli183).
Woolf’sinterpretationofAndrogynyhasagreatconnectionwithherheredityfromherartistic,high-spiritedmotherandherrational,demandingfather.Ontheonehand,sheisendowedwithsensitiveaestheticlikehermother;ontheotherhand,herfather’seducationandBloomsburygroup’sliteraryactivitiesofferheramasculinevisionandencouragehertostartwriting.Nevertheless,dominatingmalenessaroundheralsosqueezesthespaceofspiritualrelease.InWoolf’seyes,herfatheristakentobe“atyrantofinconceivableselfishness”(Schulkind65).Herdesireforliberationandwritingneedsherjoinintomasculineworldwhereshecouldfindequalfreedomasmale,buttheacceptanceofmasculinevisionmeansarenouncementofwomanhood.ThisdilemmatorturesWoolfandbringsforthacrisisinhergenderidentity.ManycriticshaveputforwarddistinctperceptionsintermsofAndrogyny.AmericanJournalistMaryJacobusdefinesAndrogynyas“asimultaneousenactmentofdesireandrepression…anessentiallyUtopianvisionofundividedconsciousness”(39).ElaineShowalterregardsAndrogynyas“themyththathelpsWoolfevadeconfrontationwithherownpainfulfemaleness”(264).Onthecontrary,WinifredHoltby,novelistandfeministcriticcommentator,hintsthat“Woolf’suseofAndrogyny,farfromevadingsexualidentityiscloselyalliedtotheoriesofbisexualityandfemalehomosexuality”(183).NorwegianfeministcriticTorilMoibelieves“Androgynyisrecognitionoffalsifyingmetaphysicalnature”and“thedeconstructionofsexualidentityisindeedauthenticallyfeminist”(13).Nowadays,Androgynyisstillatthecoreoffeminismdiscussion,
