A"steeringsensor"islocatedontheinputshaftwhereitentersthegearboxhousing.Thesteeringsensorisactuallytwosensorsinone:
a"torquesensor"thatconvertssteeringtorqueinputanditsdirectionintovoltagesignals,anda"rotationsensor"thatconvertstherotationspeedanddirectionintovoltagesignals.An"interface"circuitthatsharesthesamehousingconvertsthesignalsfromthetorquesensorandrotationsensorintosignalsthecontrolelectronicscanprocess.
Inputsfromthesteeringsensoraredigestedbyamicroprocessorcontrolunitthatalsomonitorsinputfromthevehicle'sHYPERLINK"\t"_top"speedsensor.Thesensorinputsarethencomparedtodeterminehowmuchpowerassistisrequiredaccordingtoapreprogrammed"forcemap"inthecontrolunit'smemory.Thecontrolunitthensendsouttheappropriatecommandtothe"HYPERLINK"\t"_top"powerunit"whichthensuppliestheelectricmotorwithcurrent.Themotorpushestheracktotherightorleftdependingonwhichwaythevoltageflows(reversingthecurrentreversesthedirectionthemotorspins).Increasingthecurrenttothemotorincreasestheamountofpowerassist.Thesystemhasthreeoperatingmodes:
