China'sstockmarket,whichismainlyaccessibletolargestate-ownedenterprises(SOEs),canbeseenasadaptiveandeffectiveifitsemergenceandrapiddevelopmentareunderstoodasanendogenousadjustmentprocessoffinancialdevelopmentinresponsetoboththedemandsofeconomicgrowthandchangesinpoliticalconstraints.ThefindingsofthisstudypresentaconceptualmodelofChina'sstockmarketefficiencythattakesintoaccountthecountry'sidiosyncraticsocial,economicandpoliticalenvironments.Thepapercontributestotheliteraturebyofferingaholisticviewoftheroleofhistoricaldevelopments,policyinitiatives,investors’behaviourandtheeconomicaspirationsofChinaastheypertaintostockmarketefficiency.

Weconsidertheeffectofexportsophisticationoneconomicperformancebyappealingtoregionalvariationwithinonesinglecountry(China)overthe1997–2009period.WefindevidenceinsupportofHausmann,HwangandRodrik(2007),inthatregionsspecializinginmoresophisticatedgoodssubsequentlygrowfaster.Wefindsubstantialvariationinexportsophisticationattheprovinceandprefecturelevel,controllingforthelevelofdevelopment,andthatthissophisticationinturndrivesgrowth.Ourresultssuggestthatthesegainsarelimitedtotheordinaryexportactivitiesundertakenbydomesticfirms:
nodirectgainsresultfromeitherprocessingtradeactivitiesorforeignfirms,eventhoughthesearethemaincontributorstotheglobalupgradingofChina'sexports.Assuch,theextentofassemblytradeandforeignentitiesshouldbedistinguishedinordertomeasurethetruemovementinacountry'stechnologyandthecontributionofexportstoeconomicgrowth.

Miningactivitiesandtourismarebothgrowingfastinbiodiversityintenseareasglobally.However,thedynamicandinteractionsbetweenminingandtourismwhentheybothoccurinbiodiversityhotspots,andhowtheytogethermayimpacttheeconomyandenvironmentinthesebiodiversityrichareas,remainunclear.Thispaperexaminedhowthetwoindustriesinteractintermsoftheireconomiccontributionsandspatialpatternsinabiodiversityhotspot,Yunnan,China.Weusedcorrelationanalysestomeasuretherelationshipsbetweenminingactivities,tourismvisitsandlocalgrossdomesticproductions.Wealsoemployedadistance-basedtechniquetoinvestigatethenatureofanydependencybetweenminingandtourismsites.Resultsshowedthatminingactivitiestendtobeinrelativelyfluentareaswhiletourismtendstooccurinlessdevelopedareas.Ourresultsshowedthatthelocationoftourismandminingsitesarelikelytobeclosetooneanotherbutthetwoindustriesusuallyperformbettereconomicallywhentheyareapartfromeachother.Thesefindingscanprovideinsightsonhowminingandtourismtogethermayimpacttheeconomyandenvironmentinbiodiversityrichareas,andprovideimportantinformationformanagersandplannersonbalancingminingandtourismdevelopmentintheseareas.

ThispaperexaminesandappliesthetheoreticalfoundationofthedecompositionofeconomicandproductivitygrowthtothethirtyprovincesinChina'spost-reformeconomy.Thefourattributesofeconomicgrowthareinputgrowth,adjustedscaleeffect,technicalprogress,andefficiencygrowth.AstochasticfrontiermodelwithatranslogproductionandincorporatedwithhumancapitalisusedtoestimatethegrowthattributesinChina.Theempiricalresultsshowthatinputgrowthisthemajorcontributortoeconomicgrowthandhumancapitalisinadequateeventhoughithasapositiveandsignificanteffectongrowth.Technicalprogressisthemaincontributortoproductivitygrowthandthescaleeffecthasbecomeimportantinrecentyears.Theimpactoftechnicalinefficiencyisstatisticalinsignificantinthesampleperiod.Therelevantpolicyimplicationforasustainablepost-reformChinaeconomyistheneedtopromotehumancapitalaccumulationandimprovementintechnicalefficiency.
