WhenmyfatherrefusedtounderstandthatIneededtheprivacyofaphoneinmyroom,myfrustrationturnedtotears.WhenhesensedthatIwasgainingtheupperhandindefendingmycaseforwearinglipglosstoschoolinjuniorhigh,heendedour“discussion”,leavingmesilentlydefeatedandmiserable.SowhenherefusedtochangehisideaaboutlettingmegoonmyseniorclasstriptoMontreal,Icoulddonothingbutracefromhisroomindespair.IfIcouldn’tgethimtolistentomysideofourarguments,maybeIcouldgethimtoreadit.
Withthehopethathiseyeswouldbemoreopenthanhisears,Ibegantoplead(抗辩)mycaseinanotethatbegan“DearDaddy”andendedwithhowmuchIrespectedhisopinion,howmuchIhatedtofightwithhimandhowmuchIvaluedourrelationshipand,aboveall,howmuchIlovedhim.Ifoldedmynoteintoanenvelope,sliditunderthedoorofhisbedroomandracedbacktomyownroom.

"Mcityisasafe,controlled,andrealisticenvironmentwherewearegoingtofigureouthowtheincrediblepotentialofconnectedandautomatedvehiclescanberealizedquickly,efficientlyandsafely,"PeterSweatman,directoroftheMobilityTransformationCenteratU-M,saidinastatement.
TheroadsofMcityarebuilttostandupto“rigorous,repeatable”testing,accordingtoMTCofficials.WhileMcitydriversdon'thavetocompetewithrealpedestrians,therewillbeonemechanicalfoot-traveler(arobot-likemachinenamedSebastian)thatstepsoutintotraffictoseewhethertheautomatedcarscanhitthebrakesintime.Thefakecityalsofeaturesatrafficcircle,abridge,atunnel,someunpavedroads,andevenafour-lanehighwaywithentranceandexitramps,accordingtoareportbyBloombergBusiness.
Inadditiontoevaluatingfullyautomated,ordriverlesscars,theresearchersalsohopetotestoutso-calledconnectedvehicleswithinMcity’slimits.Connectedcarscaneithercommunicatewithoneanother(vehicle-to-vehiclecontrol,orV2V)orwithpiecesofequipment,suchastrafficlights,thatarelocatednearroadways(vehicle-to-infrastructurecontrol,orV2I).
EventhesmallestdetailsofMcityhavebeenplannedoutinadvancetocopytheconditionsthatconnectedandautomatedvehiclescouldfaceintherealworld.Forexample,therearestreetsignscoveredupwithgraffiti,andfadedyellowandwhitelanemarkingslinethestreets.
McityisjustonepartofamuchlargerprojectthatMTCanditspartnerorganizationsareestablishinginanefforttogetawholefleetofconnectedanddriverlesscarsontheroadinAnnArborby2021.Inadditiontothefakecity,MTCisalsocontinuingtolaunchconnectedandsemi-autonomous(半自动)carsonrealroadways.Eventually,theUniversityofMichiganandtheMichiganDepartmentofTransportationsaidtheyhopetoput20,000connectedcarsontheroadsofsouthernMichigan.
