Thescientistsfoundthat25percentoftheworld’slanguagesarethreatened.Afteridentifyingwheretheendangeredlanguageswere,theylookedforanyenvironmental,socialoreconomicfactorsthoselanguagesmighthaveincommon,suchasruggedterrainorrapidpopulationgrowth.“Wefoundthatonaglobalscale,languagespeakerdeclinesarestronglylinkedtoeconomicgrowth-thatis,declinesareparticularlyoccurringineconomicallydevelopedregions,”Amanosaid.
“Oneimportantimplicationofthisnewstudyisthatlangu
agesinthetropicsandtheHimalayanregionarelikelytobeincreasinglythreatenedinthenearfuture,becausetheseregionsstillhavemanylocalindigenous(土生土长的)languageswithasmallnumberofspeakers,andatthesametimeareexperiencingrapideconomicgrowth,”Amanosaid.
Economicgrowthmayendangerlanguagesforavarietyofreasons.Forinstance,speakersofendangeredlanguagesmayviewanothermoredominantlanguageasofferingeconomicopportunities,andthusgiveuptheirownlanguages.Thereareotherimportantfactorsthatmightendangerlanguages,theresearcherssaid.Forinstance,policiesregardinghowl
