ItisbelievedthatAustralianhistorybeganattheendoftheeighteenthcentury.AfterseveralcenturiesofEuropeanvoyaginginthesouthernoceans,theEnglishnavalofficerJamesCooksailedtheeasterncoastin1770,nameditNewSouthWalesandtookpossessionofitinthenameofhisking.WithintwentyyearstheBritishgovernmentsentateamofexplorerstosettleinNewSouthWales.On26January1788itscommander,ArthurPhillip,begantoruleovertheeasternhalfofthecountry.Thethousandofficers,soldiers,officialsandcriminalswhocameashorefromtheelevenshipsoftheFirstFleet,anchored(停泊)intheportofSydney.Theypreparedthewayforlaterimmigrantswhospreadoutoverthecontinent.
