Startedin1636,HarvardUniversityistheoldestofallthemanycollegesanduniversitiesintheUnitedStates.Yale,Princeton,ColumbiaandDartmouthwereopenedsoonafterHarvard.
Intheearlyyears,theseschoolsweremuchalike.Onlyyoungmenwenttocollege.Allthestudentsstudiedthesamesubjects,andeveryonelearnedLatin,GreekandHebrew.Littlewasknownaboutsciencethen,andonekindofschoolcouldteacheverythingthatwasknownabouttheworld.Whenthestudentsgraduated,mostofthembecameministersorteachers.
In1782,Harvardstartedamedicalschoolforyoungmenwhowantedtobecomedoctors.Later,lawyerscouldreceivetheirtraininginHarvard'slawschool.In1825,besidesLatinandGreek,Harvardbeganteachingmodernlanguages,suchasFrenchandGerman.SoonitbeganteachingAmericanhistory.
