FoodAdditives
Purpose
Afoodadditiveisanysubstancenotnormallyconsumedasafoodinitselfandnotnormallyusedasaningredientoffood,butwhichisintentionallyaddedtoafoodtoachieveoneormoreofthetechnologicalfunctionsspecifiedinSchedule5.Itoritsby-productsmayremaininthefood.Foodadditivesaredistinguishablefromprocessingaids(seeStandard1.3.3)andvitaminsandmineralsaddedtofoodfornutritionalpurposes(seeStandard1.3.2).
ThisStandardregulatestheuseoffoodadditivesintheproductionandprocessingoffood.Afoodadditivemayonlybeaddedtofoodwhereexpresslypermittedinthisstandard.AdditivescanonlybeaddedtofoodinordertoachieveanidentifiedtechnologicalfunctionaccordingtoGoodManufacturingPractice.
