1.Summary
In1961the18membersoftheUSfigureskatingteamboardedaplanetotraveltoBelgiumontheirwaytotheworldchampionshipsinCzechoslovakia.AstheplaneapproachedBrussels,theweatherwasgood,butsomethingwaswrongwiththeplane.Twiceitdescendedasiftolandbutpulledupandascendedagain.Thesecondtimeitexplodedandcrashedtotheground.All72peopleontheplanewerekilledandthereweretenfamiliesthathadlostatleasttwodearmembers.Thecrashsitewasasceneoftotaldestruction.Laterthreepairsofmeltedskateswerefounddanglingfromoneofthewings.ThecompetitioninPraguewascanceledtohonorthedead.Neverbeforehadsuchaterribletragedyoccurredinthesportofskating.
