Wealwaysconvinceourselvesthatlifewillbebetterafterwegetmarried,haveababy,thenanother.Thenwearefrustratedthatthekidsaren‘toldenoughandwe‘llbemorecontentwhentheyare.Afterthatwe‘refrustratedthatwehaveteenagerstodealwith.Wewillcertainlybehappywhentheyareoutofthatstage.
Wealwaystellourselvesthatourlifewillbecompletewhenourspousegetshisorheracttogether,whenwegetanicercar,andareabletogoonanicevacation,whenweretire.Thetruthis,there‘snobettertimethanrightnow.Ifnotnow,when?
Ourlifewillalwaysbefilledwithchallenges.It‘sbesttoadmitthistoourselvesanddecidetobehappyanyway.
OneofmyfavoritequotescomesfromAlfredSouza.Hesaid,"Foralongtimeithadseemedtomethatlifewasabouttobegin-reallife.
Buttherewasalwayssomeobstacleintheway,somethingtobegottenthroughfirst,someunfinishedbusiness,timestilltobeserved,adebttobepaid.Thenlifewouldbegin.Atlastitdawnedontomethattheseobstaclesweremylife.Thisperspectivehashelpedmetoseethatthereisnowaytohappiness.Happinessistheway.Sotreasureeverymomentthatyouhave.Andrememberthattimewaitsfornoone.Sostopwaitinguntilyoufinishschool,untilyougobacktoschool;untilyougetmarried,untilyougetdivorced;untilyouhavekids,untilyourkidsleavehome;untilyoustartwork,untilyouretire;untilyougetanewcarorhome;untilspring;untilyouarebornagaintodecidethatthereisnobettertimethanrightnowtobehappy....
Happinessisajourney,notadestination.So,

幸福是一段旅程
我们总是相信,等我们结了婚,生了孩子生活会更美好。
等有了孩子,我们又因为他们不够大而烦恼,想等他们大些时,我们就会开心了。
可等他们进人青少年时期,我们还是同样地苦恼,于是又相信等他们过了这一阶段,幸福就会到来。
我们总是告诉自己,等夫妻间任一方肯于合作,等我们拥有更好的车,等我们能去度一次美妙的假期,等我们退休后,我们的生活一定会完美的。
而事实的真相是,没有任何时刻比现在更宝贵。
倘若不是现在,又会是何时?
我们的生活每时每刻都会有挑战。
最好是让自己接受这一事实,无论如何使自己保持快乐的心境。
我很欣赏艾尔弗雷德•苏泽的一段名言。
他说:
"长期以来,我都觉得生活--真正的生活似乎即将开始。
可是总会遇到某种障碍,如得先完成一些事情。
没做完的工作,要奉献的时间,该付的债,等等。
之后生活才会开始。
最后我醒悟过来了,这些障碍本身就是我的生活。
"这一观点让我意识到没有什么通往幸福的道路。
幸福本身就是路。
所以,珍惜你拥有的每一刻,且记住时不我待,不要再作所谓的等待--等你上完学,等你再回到学校;等你结婚或离婚;等你有了孩子或孩子长大离开家;等你开始工作或等你退休;等你有了新车或新房;等春天来临;等你有幸再来世上走一遭才明白此时此刻最应快乐……

Ijustdon’tknowmanypeoplewhopunchoutatfiveo’clockanymore.Itseemsdownrightquaint,likepocketwatchesandshoeshines.Myfathertriedtoteachmetheimportanceofhardwork,longhoursanddedicationtoacareer.Butthentherearethethingshetaughtmeunintentionally,likewhenhearrivedhomefromworkforthelasttimeandcrawledupthestairs.Myfather,aself-employedsalestrainer,wasthatsick,thattired.Hisbodywaswrackedwithlivercancer,andhesufferedtheeffectsofadiabeticulcer.Still,heinsistedontravelingtohonorhiscommitmenttogiveaseminar.Heprobablyearnedalotofmoneythatday,andhepaidtheprice:
Hereturnedtothehospitalsoonafterandwasdeadwithinthreemonths,atage58.
我的信念是在五点结束每天的工作。
在这个奉行新教徒那套“工作至上”理念的国度,我的这一信念可算是激进。
每周只工作40小时?
我认识的人中很少是下午五点打卡下班的。
那看起来就跟怀表、鞋油这类东西一样,简直是过时而怪异。
我父亲尽力教导我勤奋工作、超时工作以及献身事业这几点的重要性。
但后来,他也无意中教了我一些东西,比如那次当他最后一次下班回家爬上楼梯的时候。
我父亲是一名自雇的销售培训师。
那天,他已经病得很厉害,疲惫不堪。
肝癌拖垮了他的身体,他还饱受糖尿病溃疡的折磨。
然而,他为履行承诺仍坚持到外地主持一个研讨会。
他那天可能赚了不少钱,但他也付出了代价——不久之后又住进了医院,而且三个月后就去世了,终年58岁。

我决不要爬着楼梯回家。
作为一名报社记者,尽管我非常热爱我的工作,但我决不会因为拼命工作而把自己送进“坟墓”里,无论是字面义还是比喻义。

DoIrisknotreachingthetopofmyprofession?
Maybe,becausehonestly,knockingoffaftereighthoursprobablywon’tearnmethecornerofficeorthelucrativepromotion.Buthey,leavingworkatfiveo’clockmeansIeatdinnerwithmyfamily.Igettohoponmybikeandpedalthroughthestreetsofmyhometownastheshadowslengthenandthetrafficthins.AndIgettotakeinalotofsunsets.That’sgottobeworthsomething.
我父亲曾经告诉我,他就是没法凝视夕阳。
看着夕阳的同时他还得做些别的事——写作、阅读、下象棋。
你可以称他是成功人士:
他是一名发表过作品的作家,一位有造诣的音乐家,能说流利的德语,能熟练运用美国手语。
这一连串成就看起来挺厉害的。
但问题是:
我想凝视夕阳。
我不想边看夕阳边赶在最后期限前完成工作,也不想边看边给专栏赶稿,又或者是看着书,偶尔才朝那一抹夕阳瞥上一眼。
这引发了一个问题:
如果我五点就下班去看夕阳,会有什么后果?
我是否就无法爬到职场最高位?
也许是,因为说实话,工作八小时就下班,想搬进角落的高层办公室或升职加薪是不太可能的。
不过,嘿,五点就下班意味着我能和家人共进晚餐。
我跳上单车,穿梭在家乡的大小街道上,一切在夕阳的余晖中被拉长了影子,路上车少人稀。
从此,我看了不少夕阳美景。
这肯定有其价值所在。
咖啡与人生CoffeeandLife
Iwalkintothecoffeeshopandbreatheindeep,savoringthatfamiliararoma.Thesmellofcoffee,withahintofhazelnut,vanilla,mocha,andjustatouchofcinnamon.There’sonlyoneplaceintheworldotherthanacoffeeshopthatsmellslikethat—Grandmother’shouse.
Grandmotherdidn’tjustlikehercoffee,anditwouldn’treallydoherjusticetosayshelovedhercoffee.Grandmotherwastocoffeewhatasommelieristowine.Sheknewthe5)intricaciesofcoffee,thedifferenttastesandeventhetextures.Andonlythebestwoulddoforher.Noinstantcoffee,orcoffeeboughtatthegrocerystore.Shehadtohavefreshcoffee,fromarespectablecoffeeshop.“Themorningcupofcoffeesetsthetoneforthewholeday,”sheusedtosay.
IusedtogotoGrandmother’severySundaymorning.Herroutinewasalwaysthesame.Shewouldkissmeonceoneachcheek,hangupmycoatandleadmeintothekitchen,sliceapieceofbananabreadrightoutoftheoven(sometimescranberry),andpouracupoffreshlybrewedcoffee.
“Alexa,”shesaidtomeoneday.“Didyouknowthateveryperson’spersonalityislikeaflavorofcoffee?
”
“Really?
”Isaid,amusedathowGrandmotherrelishedhercoffeesomuchthatsherelatedeverythingtoit.
“Ye”shesaid.“You,mydear,areFrenchvanilla.Youaresweet,almostsickeninglysoattimestothediscerningcoffeedrinker.”IslightlyrecoiledatGrandmother’sassessmentofme.Youexpectyourgrandmothertocallyousweet,butneversickeninglysweet.
“Yourfatherisespresso,”shecontinued.“Hecomesonstrong.Therearemanypeoplewhodon’tlikehim,butotherscan’tlivewithoutthathighfeelingthathegivesthem.Hehasanaddictivepersonalitythatmanypeoplecan’tletgoof.”
“LetmeguesGrandmother.You’rehazelnut.”
“Hazelnut?
Whyonearthwouldyousaythat?
”
“BecauseIfindyourcoffeetalkabitnutty.”
IsmiledatGrandmother,butIcouldtellshewasnotamused.“Alexadear,Iamtryingtoteachyoualessonaboutlifehere.Idonotneedyoupokingfunatme.”
Alessonaboutlife?
Isshekidding?
“Grandmother,youcan’tdissectaperson’spersonalitybycomparingthemtoacupofcoffee.Peoplearemorecomplexthanthat.Everyonehasnuancepersonalityquirkthingsthatmakethemdifferent.Youjustcan’tgoaroundsaying,‘She’sadarkroast,he’saninstant,he’samochaalmond.’”
Grandmotherlookedatme,almostablank,dullstare.“Thenyoujustdon’tunderstandcoffee,”shesnapped,clearingmyplateandcoffeecupfromthetable.“Iguessnot,”Isighed,exasperatedatmyhazelnutgrandmother.
IwenttoGrandmother’shousemanymoretimesafterthat,andshealwayskepthersameroutine.Itwasawelcomeroutine,onethatIenjoyedeveryweek.Grandmotherdidn’ttalktomeafterthataboutthe“coffeecatastrophe”asIcalledit,buteventually,shedidstarttomakemoreridiculousclaimsconcerningherfavoritedrink.
“Iknewyourgrandfatherwastherightmanformebecausewelovedourcoffeethesameway,”shesaid.“Creamwithjustatouchofsugar.”
Irolledmyeyes.“Grandmother,manypeoplelikeitthatway.”
“Idisagree,”shesaid.“Formostpeople,iftheyprefercream,theylikealotofsugar,oratleastamoderateamount.Thosewhodrinkitwithjustatouchofsugarusuallyputmilkinit,ordrinkitblack.”
“SowhatifPapapreferredhiscoffeeblack?
Orwithmilkandsweetener?
Doesthatmeanthatyouwouldhavenevermarried?
