"Hemingwaylikedtobewheretheactionwas."TheKansasCityStardemandedthatitsreporterswriteshortsentences.Itwantedreporterstoseetheunusualdetailsinanincident.Hemingwayquicklylearnedtodoboth.Heworkedforthenewspaperonlysixmonths.ThenHemingwayleftthenewspaperandattemptedtojointheU.S.ArmysothathecouldfightinWorldWarⅠ.ButtheArmyrejectedhimforhiseyesightwasnotgoodenough,soherespondedtoaRedCrossrecruitment(征募)effortandsignedontobecomeanambulancedriverinItaly.
HisjobwastodriveaRedCrosstruckcarryingthewoundedawayfrombattle.Hewentasclosetothefightingaspossibletoseehowhewouldactinthefaceofdanger.Beforelong,thewarended.HemingwayreturnedtotheUnitedStates.LessthanayearhadpassedsincehewenttoEurope.Butinthatshorttimehehadchangedforever.Heneededtowriteaboutwhathehadseen.
ErnestHemingwaylefthomeforChicagotoprovehimself.Butheranoutofmoneyandbegantowriteforanewspaperagain.TheCanadiannewspaper,theTorontoStar,likedhisreportsaboutlifeinChicagoandpaidhimwell.
InChicago,HemingwaymetthewriterSherwoodAnderson,whowasoneofthefirstwritersinAmericatowriteaboutthelivesofcommonpeople.HemingwaysawthatAnderson’sstoriesshowedlifeasitreallywas,thewayHemingwaywastryingtodo.AndersongaveHemingwayadviceonhiswriting.HetoldHemingwaytomovetoParis,whichwasfullofyoungartistsandwritersfromallovertheworld.
SoHemingwaydecidedtomovetoParis.PariswascoldandgraywhenHemingwayandhiswifearrivedin1921.Theylivedinoneofthepoorerpartsofthecity.Theirroomsweresmallandhadnorunningwater.ButtheTorontoStaremployedhimasitsEuropeanreporter,sotherewasenoughmoneyforthetwoofthemtolive.AndthejobgaveHemingwaytimetowritehisstories.
Hemingway’sfirstbookofstorieswascalledInOurTime,whichincludedastorycalledBigTwo-HeartedRiverabouttheeffectofwaronayoungman.BigTwo-HeartedRiverisconsideredoneofthebestmodernAmericanstories.Thestoryshowstheyoungmantryingtoforgethispast,especiallytryingtoforgetthewar.Thereaderlearnsabouttheyoungman,notbecauseHemingwaytellsuswhattheyoungmanthinks,butbecauseheshowstheyoungmanlearningabouthimself.Anotherlongstory,TheSunAlsoRises,isaboutyoungAmericansinEuropeafterWorldWarⅠ.Thewarhaddestroyedtheirdreams.Andithadgiventhemnothingtoreplacethosedreams.ThewriterGertrudeSteinlatercalledthesepeoplemembersofthe"LostGeneration".Thebookwasanimmediatesuccess.
