Foreword-ThisSAERecommendedPracticeisintendedasaguidetowardstandardpracticeandissubjecttochangetokeeppacewithexperienceandtechnicaladvances.ItspurposeistopromotesafetyandefficiencybymakingavailabletosellersandbuyersofcommercialLNGpoweredheavy-dutytrucksarecommendedpracticeforconstruction,operation,andmaintenanceofsuchtrucks.
ThisdocumentwasdevelopedbytheManufacturer’sLNGTechnicalSubcommitteeoftheATAFoundation’sAlternativeFuelsTaskForce,whichwasorganizedin1994toguidethetruckingandcryogenicindustriesintheireffortsassociatedwiththeuseofLNGasanAlternateFuelforuseinheavy-dutytrucks.PriortothefirstSubcommitteemeeting,somepreliminaryworkhadbeenperformedbytheLNGonboardFuelSystemIntegrationCommittee(LOFSIC).
ThefirststepintheSubcommittee’sworkwastoperformaFailureModesandEffectsAnalysis(FMEA),facilitatedbyFailureAnalysisAssociates.ThisstudyidentifiedFailureScenariosandtheFailureMechanismswhichcouldpotentiallyleadtotheidentifiedFailureScenarios.ItistheintentoftheseRecommendedPracticestoavoidthefailuremechanismsidentifiedbythatstudywherepossible,andtodeviseandrecommendmeansofconstruction,operation,andmaintenancewhichwouldwarnofanimpendingfaultorfailure,and/ormitigatetheoutcomeshouldafailureoccur.
ConcurrentwiththeFMEA,thesubcommitteeundertookanexhaustivereviewofexistingcodes,standards,recommendedpractices,andregulationspertinenttotrucksandLNGinforceorinpreparation,sothattheRecommendedPracticewouldbeconsonantwithsuch,whetherinforceorunderpreparation.Thesearelistedin2.1.
Thispublicationnecessarilydealstosomeextentingeneralities,sinceitisnotpossibletoanticipateandaddresseveryindividualsetofconditionsthatmightbefoundinconstructing,operating,andmaintainingLNGpoweredheavy-dutytrucks.Itisintendedtobeapracticalguideillustrationratherthandictatingtheapplicationofrecommendedpractices.Thecorrectapplicationofthesepracticesinanyactualfieldsituationmustrelyonsoundjudgmentandexperience.WhethertoinstitutethisvoluntaryRecommendedPracticeisuptoeachindividualcompany,andmembersoftheSubcommitteehavenotreachedanyagreementtouseitortorequireitsuse.
