IthinkdrivingfromHyannisPorttoBoston,itwassomovingtoseepeoplestandingalongthefreeway,gatheredonbridges;entirefamilies,manyintears,boyswiththeirhandsovertheirheartssaluting.ItwasagreatpieceofAmericanhistorythatyouwereabletodriveby.Andthiswasaweekday,inthemiddleoftheday,sopeopleobviouslyhadtoleaveworkorleavetheirvacations,parktheircarsandwaittojustwatchahearsegoby.AndIthoughtitwassogenerousofthepeople,andsomoving.It'ssomethingIthinkTeddywouldhavebeensothrilledbyandalsohumbledby.

Andyouunderstoodthatpublicservice,forhim,wasaboutotherpeople,aboutservingpeople.

Well,Teddywas,Ithink,knowntothepeoplewhoknewhim,andhisheartwasextraordinary.Hewasthemostcompassionate,empatheticman.AndIthinkhewasthatwaybecausehehimselfwaswoundedandhehimselfknewpain,hehimselfknewstruggle,heknewabandonment.Heknewallofthethingsthatpainahumanbeing.Andsowhenhesawotherhumanbeingsinpain,orwheretheircharacterwasquestionedorwheretheyhadloss,hewasalwaysthefirstpersontoreachout.Andnobodydoesthatwhohasn'tfeltthatwaythemselves.AndIthinkthatthatwassomethingthatpeopleoftenoverlookedabouthim,didn'tunderstandabouthim.Butthiswasaman,youknow,whohadfoughtalot,whohadstruggledalot,whohadbeenthroughalot,andheunderstoodwhenotherpeoplealsowentthroughalot.AndIthinkyouhavethatoutpouringbecausepeople--regularpeopleunderstoodthatabouthim.Theysawthroughallofthelabels,theysawthrough,youknow,whatpeoplewrote,theysawthatthiswasamanwhounderstoodfamily,whounderstoodstruggle,whounderstoodtriumphandwhounderstood,youknow,weaknesses.Andweallhavethat.Andrarelydoyouseeit,Ithink,soopenlyinapublicpersonasyousawitwithTeddy.

Ithinkpeople,youknow,peopleoftensay,"Well,itwasn'tasurprise."Well,Ithinkdeathisalwaysasurprise.AndI'vejustgonethroughtwointwoweeks.Andit'salwaysasurpriseandit'salwaysfinalandit'salwaysdifficult,andIthinkpeoplegrieveintheirownwayandintheirowntime.SoIthinkTeddywasoneofthoselarger-than-lifefiguresinourfamily,hewasreallythecenterofourfamily,andhewasoneofthosepeoplethatyouneverexpectedtodie.Youjustexpectedhimtobeattheodds,youexpectedhimtodefyeverybody'sexpectations.AndIthinkanybodywho'sbeenthroughcancerknowshowupanddownitis,soyouhearonedayit'sbad,onedayit'sgoodandyou,Ithink,alwayshopethatthispersonisgoingtobeattheodds.
