Igrewuponasteadydietofsciencefiction.InhighschoolItookabustoschoolanhoureachwayeveryday.AndIwasalwaysabsorbedinabook,sciencefictionbook,whichtookmymindtootherworlds,andsatisfied,inanarrativeform,thisinsatiablesenseofcuriositythatIhad.
AndyouknowthatcuriosityalsomanifesteditselfinthefactthatwheneverIwasntinschoolIwasoutinthewoods,hikingandtaking“samples”——frogsandsnakesandbugs,andbringingthemback,lookingatthemunderthemicroscope.Youknow,Iwasarealsciencegeek.butitwasallabouttryingtounderstandtheworld,understandthelimitsofpossibility.
Andmyloveofsciencefictionactuallyseemedtomirroredintheworldaroundme,becausewhatwashappening,thiswasinthelate60s,weweregoingtothemoon,wewereexploringthedeepoceans.Jacquescousteauwascomingintoourlivingroomswithhisamazingspecialsthatshowedusanimalsandplacesandawondrousworldthatwecouldneverreallyhavepreviouslyimagined.so,thatseemedtoresonatewiththewholesciencefictionpartofit.
AndIwasanartist.Icoulddraw.Icouldpaint.AndIfoundthatbecausetherewerentvideogamesandthissaturationofcgmoviesandallofthisimageryinthemedialandscape,Ihadtocreatetheseimagesinmyhead.Youknow,wealldid,askidshavingtoreadabook,andthroughtheauthorsdescriptionputsomethingonthemoviescreeninourheads.Andso,myresponsetothiswastopaint,todrawaliencreatures,alienworlds,robots,spaceships,allthatstuff.Iwasendlesslygettingbustedinmathclassdoodlingbehindthetextbook.Thatwas,thecreativityhadtofinditsoutletsomehow.
Andaninterestingthinghappened——Jacquescousteaushowsactuallygotmeveryexcitedaboutthefactthattherewasanalienworldrighthereonearth.Imightnotreallygotoanalienworldonaspaceshipsomeday.Thatseemedprettydarnunlikely.butthatwasaworldIcouldreallygoto,righthereonearth,thatwasasrichandexoticasanythingthatIhadimaginedfromreadingthesebooks.
so,IdecidedIwasgoingtobecomeanexoticscubadiverattheageof15.AndtheonlyproblemwiththatwasthatIlivedinalittlevillageincanada,600milesfromthenearestocean.butIdidntletthatdauntme.Ipesteredmyfatheruntilhefinallyfoundascubaclassinbuffalo,newYork,rightacrosstheborderfromwherewelive.AndIactuallygotcertifiedinapoolinaYmcAinthedeadofwinterinbuffalo,newYork.AndIdidntseetheocean,arealocean,foranothertwoyears,untilwemovedtocalifornia.
sincethen,intheintervening40years,Ivespentabout3,000hoursunderwater,And500hoursofthatwereinsubmersibles.AndIvelearnedthatdeepoceanenvironment,andeventheshallowocean,issorichwithamazinglifethatreallyisbeyondourimagination.naturesimaginationissoboundlesscomparedtoourownmeagerhumanimagination.Istill,tothisday,standinabsoluteaweofwhatIseewhenImakethesedives.Andmyloveaffairwiththeoceanisongoing,andjustasstrongasiteverwas.
but,whenIchoseacareer,asanadult,itwasfilmmaking.AndthatseemedtobethebestwaytoreconcilethisurgeIhadtotellstories,withmyurgestocreateimages.AndIwas,asakid,constantlydrawingcomicbooks,andsoon.so,filmmakingwasthewaytoputpicturesandstoriestogether.Andthatmadesense.AndofcoursethestoriesthatIchosetotellweresciencefictionstories:

Andso,Ireallygotbittenbythebugofdeepoceanexploration.ofcourse,thecuriosity,thesciencecomponentofit.Itwaseverything.Itwasadventure.Itwascuriosity.Itwasimagination.Anditwasanexperiencethathollywoodcouldntgiveme.because,Icouldimagineacreatureandwecouldcreateavisualeffectforit.butIcouldntimaginewhatIwasseeingoutthatwindow.AswedidsomeofoursubsequentexpeditionsIwasseeingcreaturesathydrothermalventsandsometimesthingsthatIhadneverseenbefore,sometimesthingsthatnoonehadseenbefore,thatactuallywerenotdescribedbyscienceatthetimethatwesawthemandimagedthem.
so,Iwascompletelysmittenbythis,andhadtodomore.Andso,Iactuallymadeakindofcuriousdecision.AfterthesuccessofTitanic,Isaid,“okay,Imgoingtoparkmydayjobasahollywoodmoviemaker,andImgoingtogobeafulltimeexplorerforawhile.”Andso,westartedplanningtheseexpeditions.Andwewoundupgoingtothebismark,andexploringitwithroboticvehicles.wewentbacktothe“Titanic”wreck.wetooklittlebotsthatwehadcreatedthatspoolledafiberoptic.Andtheideawastogoinanddoaninteriorsurveyofthatship,whichhadneverbeendone.nobodyhadeverlookedinsidethewreck.Theydidnthavethemeanstodoit,sowecreatedtechnologytodoit.

AtthesametimeIwasgettingveryinterestedinspacescienceaswell,again,itsthesciencefictioninfluence,asakid.AndIwoundupgettinginvolvedwiththespacecommunity,reallyinvolvedwithnAsA,sittingonthenAsAadvisoryboard,planningactualspacemissions,goingtoRussia,goingtothepre-cosmonautbiomedicalprotocols,andallthesesortsofthings,toactuallygoandflytotheinternationalspacestationwithour3Dcamerasystems.Andthiswasfascinating.butwhatIwoundupdoingwasbringingspacescientistswithusintothedeep.Andtakingthemdownsothattheyhadaccessastrobiologists,planetaryscientists,peoplewhowereinterestedintheseextremeenvironments,takingthemdowntothevents,andlettingthemsee,andtakesamplesandtestinstruments,andsoon.
