Abstract:
Thispaperintroducesthegeneraldefinitionandthemainfeaturesoflearnerautonomy.Italsotakesintoaccounttheteacher'sroleinthenewtrendofeducationaldevelopment.Opposedtothetraditionallearningstyle,learnerautonomyisanewlearningstylewhichreferstotheabilityofalearnertotakechargeofhisownlearning.Learnerautonomyisbecomingthemostimportantrequirementforlearnersintheeducationprocess.Itbringslearningoutofclassroom;itremovestheimportantpointfromteachertolearner.Foreignlanguagelearningisnotonlythelearningoflinguisticsorgrammar;itincludesthelearningofculture,history,thoughts,andsoon.Learnerautonomyhastheindirectinfluenceonthedevelopmentofcommunity,anditalsoplaysaverygreatimportantroleinforeignlanguagelearning.Atthepresenttime,learnerautonomyishighlypraisedbyschooleducation,soitisbecomingamoreimportantlearningskillforlearners.

1.Introduction
Asopposedtothetraditionallearningstyle,whichreferstotheteacher-centeredclassroomactivities,thereisanewlearningstyleacceptedandhighlypraisedbyteachersandlearnersofeverylearningaspectnowadays.Thislearningstyleincludestheabilityofalearnertotakechargeofhisownlearning;itisanessentialmatterofthelearner’spsychologicalrelationtotheprocessandcontentoflearning.Thelearnershouldbetotallyresponsibleforhislearning,heshouldknowwhattolearn,howtolearn,andwhatismore,toknowwhytolearn.Thatistosay,thelearnershouldhavetheabilitytomakedecisionsbyhimselfandshouldberesponsibleforthedecisionshemade.Furthermore,thelearnershouldbeawareofhisowntalentsandinterests,bythishecanstimulatethepotentialintellectualfactorsinhim.Thislearningstyleisnamed“learnerautonomy”.
Theterm“learnerautonomy”wasfirstcoinedin1981byHenriHolic,andhewascalledasthe“father”oflearnerautonomy.Sincethen,therearemanypeoplewhohavestudiedaboutit,andmostofthembelievethatitisanewfieldwithgreatpotentialpowerthatshouldbedeveloped.Ofcoursethereareenoughresultsofresearchesnowadaystoprovethatlearnerautonomyisamostimportantandeffectivelearningstyle,especiallyinforeignlanguagelearning.
Itisundoubtedthatlearnerautonomycanbeconsideredasanindependentaction,acapacityofdetachment,creativethoughtsandcriticalreflection,andsoon.Asitalsoplaysaveryimportantroleinbuildingupone’scharacterandbehavior,educationsystemandparentsattachagreatimportancetoit.Schoolsarethemajordecisivepowerinthesocialdevelopment,sotheyshouldberesponsibleforthesociety.Itmeansthattheconceptofeducationgoals,curriculum,andtherequirementsforlearnersofaschoolshouldbematchedwiththedemandsofthecommunity.Schools’obligationispreparingthelearnersforthedevelopmentofthecommunity.Atpresent,globalizationisthetendencyofeverycommunity’sdevelopment.Globalizationbringsmorechallengestotheyounggeneration,atthesametimeitbringsopportunities.Nomatterwhatitbrings,itasksforindependence,innovationandindividualorpersonalability.LikeDarwin’stheory,onlythestrongestthatfitsthechangeswillexist,otherswilldie.Countriesallaroundtheworldaretryingtheirbesttofitwiththeglobalization;theyarechangingtheirconcepts,thoughts,andthewaytheydoorconsiderthings.Asaconsequence,theconditionsfordevelopmentaskthecommunitytokeepchangingandtakingactions,theactionsthecommunitytakescallforpositiveparticipationandresponseofeveryindividualofthecommunity.Inaword,demandsofcommunityandrequirementsofschoolsarethemajorfactorstomakelearnerautonomymoreimportant.
Inconclusion,itcanmakesurethatindependentandself-reliantorinotherword“learnerautonomy”istheirresistibletendencyofthedevelopmentofneweducationconcepts,anditisthemoreimportantlearningstyleaccordingtosomefactorsthattheauthorhasmentionedabove.
2.LiteratureReview
2.1DefinitionofLearnerAutonomy
Nowadayslearnerautonomyisbecomingthemostimportantrequirementforlearnersintheeducationprocess.Asithasbeenstudiedbysomepersons,learnerautonomyhasmanydefinitionsalready.Fieldmentionedinhisarticlethatattheverybeginningofthestudyaboutlearnerautonomy,thegoalsoflearnerautonomywerejusttwo:
1)totrainlearnerstofunctionbetterduringtheirperiodofstudy;2)toensurelearnerscontinuetoacquireL2aftertheirfirstperiodofstudywasover(Field,2007).Bowringdescribedthatautonomouslearnerknowshowtolearnandhasadispositiontodosomething.Hecanidentify,onhisown,and/orwithothers,aproblem,analysesitscomponentsandthenmarshaltheresources,humanandnon-human,tosolveit(West-BurnhamandCoates,2006).Accordingtothosedescriptionsaboveitiseasytobefoundthat“awarenessofthenecessityoflearning”and“abilityofindependentlearning”arethemostimportantfeaturesoflearningautonomy.Itisalwayscomparedwiththeteacher-guidedlearningmodel.Intraditionallearningways,learnersgottheinformationofwhattolearn,whytolearn,andhowtolearnfromteachers.Atpresent,onthecontrary,theconceptoflearnerautonomyrequireslearner’scapabilitiestodecidewhattolearnandevaluatethevaluesoftheknowledgeheisgoingtolearn,andtofindthemoreeffectivelearningskillsallbyhimself.Inotherwords,itisanewchallengetotheoldteachingandlearningmodel.Itbringslearningoutofclassroom;itremovestheimportantpointfromteachertolearner.Inaword,learnerautonomycallsforlearner’sabilitytoaccomplishthelearningprocessbyhisown.Bydevelopingskillsinthreeareas,suchasmetacognitive,cognitive,andschizoaffective,languagelearnercanbuilduplearnerindependenceandautonomywherebyhecantakecontrolofhisownlearning.
2.2Teacher’sRoleinLearning
Autonomouslearnershouldhavetheabilitytotakechargeofhisownlearningandtosolveproblemsbyhimself.Butitdoesn’tmeanthatautonomouslearnerneverneedsanycompaniestolearnincooperationoranyteacherstoguidehimtolearn.Autonomouslearningalsocanhappeninteamworksandinsomekindsofclassactivities.Itisnodoubtthatautonomouslearneristhelearnerwhohasthemosteffectivelearningskillsandcandifferentiateandanalyzetheknowledgeindependentlyinhismind.Intheconditionsoflearners’highlydevelopedautonomouslearningabilities,teachersarestillneeded.Theimportanceofteacher’sroleisdifferentaccordingtolearners’age,theleveloflearners’knowledgeanddifferencesoflearners’learningmotivationorgoals.Foryoungchildren,teachersplaythekeyrolesintheirlearning.Itcanbedescribedastheyaresailingtogetheronthesea,learnersarethesailors,andteacheristhecaptain.Heleadsthesailorssailingtotheirgoalssafelyandasplanned.Wecaneasilyimaginethatwhatwillhappentotheshipwhichhasnoacaptain,especiallywhenthereareonlyinexperiencedsailorsontheship.
Teacher’sroleasaleaderisnomoreimportantwhenlearnersbecomemoreexperiencedandhavedevelopedtheirlearningskills.Foradults,whentheyarematureenoughtotakechargeoftheirlearning,thentheteacher’srolecanbeignored.
Astheconceptofteachingmodelchanged,teacher’sroleischanging.Nowadaystheyareaskedtodevelopteachingskillsmuchrelatedtostimulatelearner’sabilitiesoflearning,nottoteachlearnerstheknowledgeitselfdirectly.Teacher’sroleischangingtomatchwithlearner’sneedsandthenewtrendandrequiresoflearningstyle.
3.TheImportanceofLearnerAutonomy
3.1LearnerAutonomyasaLearningStyle
Asalearningstyle,learnerautonomyiscarryingsomeefficientlearningskills,soitisnotonlythemoreeffectiveone,butalsotheessentialone.AccordingtoArnold,learnerautonomyisacapacitytotakecontrolofone’sownlearningintheserviceofone’sperceivedneedsandaspirations.Inconcreteterms,learnerautonomyasacapacityreferstothedomain-specificknowledgeandskillsnecessarytomakechoicesconcerningwhat,whyandhowtolearn,toimplementtheplanandtoevaluatetheoutcomesoflearning(Arnold,2000).Anyaspectofthisdefinitionisstrongenoughtoillustratetheimportanceoflearnerautonomyinforeignlanguagelearning.
