WhenthisShapesawMrs.Darling,itrushedtothewindowafterit,justasranoutintothenight,Mrs.Darlingsuddenlyclosedthewindow.AndMrs.Darlingrushedtothewindowafteritranoutintothenight,Mrs.Darlingsuddenlyclosedthewindow.TheShapefled;butsomethingfellontheflooratMrs.Darling’sfeet.ItwastheshadowofthisstrangeflyingShape.Mrs.Darlingpickeduptheshadowandputitinadrawer;butshefeltveryanxiousaboutthesafetyofherchildren.ShewasafraidthattheShapemightcomebackandhurtthem,butshehopedthatNanawouldcometothenurseryandprotectthemfromalldanger.ButsomedaysafterthatNanawasledtotheyardtosleepinherkennel.ThatnightthewindowwaspushedopenandthestrangeShapeslippedintotheroomandbegantodanceabout.

”itcried.Nanabarkedfuriouslyoutside.“Ican’tbehappywithoutmyshadow.TinkerBell,TinkerBell,whereismydearlittleshadow?
”criedtheShape.AtthatatinyBalloffireflewintotheroom,andsprangroundtheroom.Whereveritwentitmadeatinklingsoundlikealittlesilverbell.Nowthislittleballoffirewasreallyafairygirl.ShetoldtheShapewheretheshadowwas.Soonthedrawerwasopened,theshadowwaspulledout,andtheShapedancedroundtheroomwithdelight.TheShapecouldfinditsshadow,itwastrue;butitcouldneverputitonagain.Andsoallthedelightwent,andtheshapewassounhappythattearsfilleditseyesandrolleddownitscheeks.Justatthattime,Wendywokeup.Shewasnotafraid,butaskedthelittleShapewhyitwascrying.Thensheaskedititsname,andtheshapetoldherthatitwasPeterPan.WendgotaneedleandsomethreadandsewedtheshadowontoPeterPan,andthenPeterPandancedwithjoy,forwhereverhewenttheshadowfollowedhimonthefloor.PeterPanthentoldWendythestoryofhislife.Hesaidthathelivedinaplacecallednever-Never-Land,withalotoflittleboyswhohadallbeendroppedoutoftheirbabycarriagesbycarelessnurses.HealsosaidthattheylivedwithfairieseverwouldremainhappyboysinthisenchantingNever-Never-Land.Hethentoldherthatwhenthefirstbabylaughed,thelaughterbrokeintolittlepieces,andeachlittlepiecebecameafairy,andwentdancingabouttheworld.Butwheneverachildsaidthatitdidnotbelieveinfairies,thenoneofthefairiesdied.PeterPansaidthatitwasadreadfulandwickedthingforachildtosaythatitdidnotbelieveinfairies.Therewasonlyonethingthatmadethemsad,hesad,andthatwasthewantofamother;alltheboysinNever-Never-Landwantedtohaveamotherverymuchindeed.Wendyaskediftherewasanylittlegirlamongthemwhocouldpretendtobetheirmother;butPeterPanshookhisheadandansweredthatgirlsneverdroppedoutoftheirbaby-carriages;theywerefartooclever.ThispleasedWendy,andshelovedPeterPan.“Oh,wend,”criedPeter,“comeandlivewithusandbeourmother!
”Wendy’sbrotherswokeup.PeterPansaidhewouldteachthemalltoflyifWendywouldonlycomeandbetheirmother.Whenthechildrenheardthattheycouldlearntofly,theywerequiteexcited,andatoncebegantojumpupintotheair.Buteverytimetheyjumpedtheyfellontotheground,“LookandflyasIdo,”criedPeter;andsosaying,heflewgracefullyhighupintotheair,andsailednoiselesslyroundtheroom.Soonthechildrenlearned,andallbegantoflyroundtheroomwithcriesofdelight.Thenthewindowswereopenedwide,andtinkerbellledthewayintothenight.PeterheldWendy’shandandtheyfloatedawayintothestarrynight.VerysoonMrs.Darling,whohadjustcomehomefromthetheater,rushedintothenurserywithNanaatherheels.Butitwastoolate.Thechildrenhadalreadyleftfornever-never-land.
