Researchersfollowed11,135peoplebornin1958upuntiltheageof50,recordingdepressivesymptomsandlevelsofphysicalactivityatregularintervalsinadulthood.Theyfoundthateachadditionalactivityperiodperweekreducedoddsofdepressionby6%.InEngland19%ofmenand26%ofwomenarecurrentlyclassedas“inactive”,andthisstudysuggeststhatactivitycouldsignificantlyimprovetheirmentalaswellasphysicalhealth.
“Assumingtheassociationiscausal,physicalactivityhasaprotectiveeffectagainstdepression.Ifanadultbetweentheirtwentiesandfortieswhoisn’tphysicallyactivebecameactive3timesperweek,theywouldreducetheirrisksofdepressionbyabout16%.”saysDr.SnehaloftheUCLInstituteofChildHealth,leadauthorofthestudy.
