Atall,wide,spreading,wildmangotreestoodinaforestclearing.Ononeofitsupperbranchesapairofgolden-backedwoodpeckersdugaholeandraisedabroodoftheiryoung.Peckywastheyoungestofthebrood.Ashewasthesmallestandweakestoftheyoungwoodpeckers,hisparentsfussedoverhimalot.Thusspoilt,hebecamelazy.
Peckyhadtwosistersandabrother.AssoonastheygrewtheirflightfeatherstheyworriedPapaandMamatoteachthemtofly.Theirparentswereonlytoohappytoteachthem.Theythentaughttheyoungsterstohuntforfood.Soon,adaycamewhenPecky’sbrotherandsistersbidthemamerryfarewell“Kee-kee_kee_krr”andweregone.
Peckyshowednosignsofmoving.Besidesbeinglazy,hehadgrownfondofthemangotreeanditssurroundings.Thetreestoodbesideapoolofwater.Itattractedwildanimalsfromfarandnear.Fromhisnestholehighabove,Peckycouldseeallthathappenedbelow.Itwasfuntowatchtheyoungonesofmonkeys,elephantsanddeeratplay.
ItwasnotoftenthatPeckysawtigersandleopards.hisfathertoldPeckythattheywerecreaturesofthenightandonlyrarelymovedaboutduringtheday.Whentheydidcometothepoolbyday,therewasgreatexcitementallaround.ItthrilledPeckytoseethesehandsomeanimals.LifewaspleasantforPecky.Hedidnothaveacareintheworld.Hisparentsgavehimallthefoodhecouldeatandcaredforhim.SoPeckydecidedtoliveinthenestforever.
ButPecky’sparentsbegantoworry.Theywerewornoutaftertheycaresofraisingafamilyandweretiredandneededsomerest.Theywantedtoleavethenest.ButtheyfeltthatitwastheirdutytoteachPeckytolookafterhimselfbeforegoing.ButPeckyprovedtobeadifficultpupil.Hehadtobebribedwithjuicyinsectstolearnevensimplethings.Hewasafraidofflyingandwouldnotevenattemptit.Finally,hisfatherhadtopushhimdown.Inordertoavoidcrashingtotheground,Peckyflappedhiswingsandloandbehold,hecouldfly!
TeachingPeckytohuntforfoodthewoodpeckerwayprovedmoredifficult.Whenallattemptsfailed,hisPapaandMamalethimstarve.Itworked.Hewaspreparedtofollowthemandtakehislesson.

Hewastryingtolocateinsectsorlarvaelyinghiddenbelowthesurface.Ahollowsoundingspotcouldmeanthattherewassomethingworthlookingfor.Whenhethoughthehadpassedupalikelyspothewouldgobackin‘reversegear’.Veryfewbirdscoulddosuchathing.
AndPeckywatchedinamazement.“HowdoesPadoit?

“Itissimple,really,”hismotherexplained.“Wehaveshortstronglegs,sharpclawsandourtoesaredirectedforwardandbackwardstogiveusagoodgripforclingingtotreetrunks.”
“Itlooksprettycrazytome.Whydon’twesimplyperchonabranchlikeotherbirds,insteadofdoingallthesecircustricks?
”hejoked.
PapawoodpeckerlocatedsomelarvaeandcalledPeckyover.WhenPeckyjoinedhim,Papawoodpeckerwedgedhisshortstifftailagainstthetree,tookafirmgripofthetrunk,raisedhisheadandpoundedaway“drr-r-r-r”。
Woodchipsflewinalldirections.Itwaslikeapowerdrillatwork.Peckywasimpressed.“Ohmy,whataperformance!
”heexclaimed.Heaskedhismother,“Howdoeshedoit?
”
“Lookatyourbill,son,”shesaidandthenrememberedthathecouldnotseehisownbillverywellasitwassetclosetohiseyesandtheybothlaughedtheirtinnylaugh,“Kee-kee_kee_krr.”ThenMamawoodpeckerexplained,“Lookatmybill,Pecky.Itisshapedlikeachisel.Theheadisthehammer,forwhichpowercomesfromourneckandbackmuscles.Wecanboreholesinwoodwiththesetools.”
“Whyshouldweboreholesinwood?
”Peckyasked.
“Itisacaseofadaptation.Everypartofourbodyisadaptedforthiswayoflife,tohuntforinsectsintreetrunks.”
ThisdidnotimpressPecky.Toappealtohisprideshesaid,“Wearespecialists,son.”AsshespokeshebecameenthusiasticandclappedPeckyontheshoulderanddeclared,“Weareprofessionals.”
Justthenapairofmynahscameandsatonthetreeandshepointedtothemandsaid,“Thesetwomaybeadaptedtotheirwayoflife.Buttheyarecertainlynotprofessionals.Areyounotproudson,tobedoingsomethingwhichotherscannotdo?

LazyPecky,whowaslookingforaneasyliving,didnotsharehismother’senthusiasm.Insteadheaskedhisfather,“Doesn’tthispoundinggiveyouahorribleheadache,Pa?

“No,Pecky,”hesaidandwentontoexplainthattheyhadspecialabsorbentmusclesandspongybonesaroundtheirbraintosavethemfromshock.Hisfatherhadbythenfinisheddigging.HeaskedPeckytotakehisplace,pushhisbeakinasfaritwouldgoandthenstickhistongueinfurther.TohissurprisePeckyfoundthathecouldstretchhistonguebeyondhisbill.Herolledhislong,barbedtongue,stickywithsaliva,overthefatlarvainside,pulleditintohismouthandateitgreedily.
“Now,ityourturn,son,”hisfathertoldhim.Peckydidnotliketheideaatall.Whenbothhisparentsinsisted,heagreedtogiveitatry.Hewantedtogetovertheunpleasanttaskquickly.Hisfatherfoundhimalikelyspottodig.Peckywentoverandwithouttakingapropergrip,withoutplacinghisbodyinthecorrectpositionandwithoutbracinghimselfwithhistail,startedhammeringaway.Notonlyhisheadachebuthelosthisgripandfell.Thenandtherehedecidedthatthewoodpecker’swayoflifewasnotforhim.
Heaskedhisparentsifhecouldeatanythingelse.“Ofcourse,youcantrysomepulpyfruitsnowandthen,andhuntantsforachange,”hismothertoldhim.
Hisquestionworriedherandsheasked,“Whatistheidea,Pecky?

Hereplied,“IfIcanadaptmyselftoaneasierwayoflife,whyshouldIgobangingmyheadagainstatreeandgetaheadacheinthebargain?
”
Hismotherwasannoyed.Asalastchance,shetriedtoappealtohissentiment.“Son,wehaveaplaceinnature.Averyimportantplace.Manyofthetreesyouseeherewouldhavedied,hadwenotdugoutwood-boringbeetlesandotherinsectsthatweredamagingthem.”Shecontinued,“Why,thisverymangotreeyouaresofoundof,wouldhavebeenkilledbyitsenemiesbutforyourfatherandme.”
Peckyrefusedtobeconvinced.
WhenPeckywentbacktothenest,PapawoodpeckerlookedatMamawoodpecker,wholookedastiredandwornoutashe,andsaid,“Idon’tthinkweshouldwasteourtimeanymore.Peckywillhavetolearnforhimself.”Theyflewawaywithheavyhearts.
Peckydidnotmisshisparentsmuch.Inawayhewashappytheyhadgone.Hethoughttheynaggedhimfornothing.“Ihaven’tacareintheworld,”heshoutedforalltheanimalsandbirdstohear.“WhyshouldIhave?

Hewasindeedhandsome,Hehadabeautifulcrimsoncrest,ashiny,golden-yellowback,dashesofwhiteandblack,abeautifulcombinationofcolours.Thewholeeffectwasstriking,especiallywhenheflewinthemannerofhiskind-jerkily,upanddown,upanddown.
“AmInotclever?
”Peckyhaddecidedthathewasnotgoingtobedumblikeotherwoodpeckers,knockinghisheadagainstwood.
“Anddon’tIhavemyownlovelytree?

“Howsensiblethese‘barkinspectors’are,”commentedPecky.Aftertheylefthetriedtocopythem.Buthisbillandtongueweretoolargetogetintothecracksinthebark.Athisclumsyapproach,insectswithdrawfurtherintotheirhidingplaces.Attheendoftheday,Peckywasmorehungrythanever.Hecurledupinhisnestholeandspentarestlessnight.
Awarblerwasthefirstvisitortothemangotreethefollowingmorning.Heflittedfromoneclusterofleavestoanotherpokinghisbillamongthem,caughtmanyinsects.Itlookedverysimple.Peckycalledthewarblerthe‘leafinspector’andthoughthewasaverycleverhunter.Hespentthewholeofthatmorningtryingtocatchinsectsthewaythe‘leafinspector’did.Hefoundthathewastooheavyandhisbelltoolargeforsuchfinework.
ThenextcreaturetocatchPecky’sattentionwasachameleon.Itwaswithgreatdifficultythathemadeoutthecreature.Theanimallookedmuchlikeamangoleaf,underwhichhelayhidden.AsPeckywatchedhim,thechameleonshotouthistongueandneatlycaughtabeewhichwashoveringoveraclusterofmangoflowers.Peckyrememberedthathehadalongtongue,too.Thechameleon’swayofhuntingseemedsoeasy.WhenPeckytriedtocopythechameleonhefoundthatwithhiscrimsoncrestandgoldenback,hecouldnothidehowevermuchhetried.Whenhedidmanagetogetclosetoaninsect,hefoundhistonguewasnotenoughorfastenoughtoproduceresults.
ThefollowingmorningPeckynoticedaflockofgreenparrotsflyinginaparticulardirection.Somemynahssoonfollowedthem.Notlongafterwards,apairofgoldenoriolesreturned
