Nineteenyearsago,almosttotheday,welostthreeastronautsinaterribleaccidentontheground.Butwe'veneverlostanastronautinflight.We'veneverhadatragedylikethis.Andperhapswe'veforgottenthecourageittookforthecrewoftheshuttle.Butthey,theChallengerSeven,wereawareofthedangers,butovercamethemanddidtheirjobsbrilliantly.Wemournsevenheroes:
MichaelSmith,DickScobee,JudithResnik,RonaldMcNair,EllisonOnizuka,GregoryJarvis,andChristaMcAuliffe.Wemourntheirlossasanationtogether
Forthefamiliesoftheseven,wecannotbear,asyoudo,thefullimpactofthistragedy.Butwefeeltheloss,andwe'rethinkingaboutyousoverymuch.Yourlovedonesweredaringandbrave,andtheyhadthatspecialgrace,thatspecialspiritthatsays,"Givemeachallenge,andI'llmeetitwithjoy."Theyhadahungertoexploretheuniverseanddiscoveritstruths.Theywishedtoserve,andtheydid.Theyservedallofus.

AndIwanttosaysomethingtotheschoolchildrenofAmericawhowerewatchingthelivecoverageoftheshuttle'stake-off.Iknowit'shardtounderstand,butsometimespainfulthingslikethishappen.It'sallpartoftheprocessofexplorationanddiscovery.It'sallpartoftakingachanceandexpandingman'shorizons.Thefuturedoesn'tbelongtothefainthearted;itbelongstothebrave.TheChallengercrewwaspullingusintothefuture,andwe'llcontinuetofollowthem.
I'vealwayshadgreatfaithinandrespectforourspaceprogram.Andwhathappenedtodaydoesnothingtodiminishit.Wedon'thideourspaceprogram.Wedon'tkeepsecretsandcoverthingsup.Wedoitallupfrontandinpublic.That'sthewayfreedomis,andwewouldn'tchangeitforaminute.
We'llcontinueourquestinspace.Therewillbemoreshuttleflightsandmoreshuttlecrewsand,yes,morevolunteers,morecivilians,moreteachersinspace.Nothingendshere;ourhopesandourjourneyscontinue.
IwanttoaddthatIwishIcouldtalktoeverymanandwomanwhoworksforNASA,orwhoworkedonthismissionandtellthem:
"Yourdedicationandprofessionalismhavemovedandimpressedusfordecades.Andweknowofyouranguish.Weshareit."
