IgavespeechesfromuniversitytouniversityinChina.SometimesIhadtocontinuouslyflyfromcitytocitybecauseofmytightschedule.InApril2009,Iflewtothreecitiesandgavespeechesatsixuniversitieswithineightdays.Thespeecheswereallabouthowtomakethebestofcollegelife,planstepsbeyondcollege,growasanintellectualthroughlifelonglearning,leadalifeofintegrity,andsetameaningfulcareergoal.
EverytimeIspoketoChinesecollegestudents,Isawintheirpassionateeyestheireagernesstolearnfromme.Iknewtheyweregoingthroughacrucialstageoftheirlives.Theywerewonderinghowtheycouldusetheircollegeeducationtorealizetheirdreamsinthefuture,andtheyfoundguidanceinmyspeeches.

WhenIrecruitedinternsforMicrosoftResearchAsiain2000,IbegantohaveclosecontactwithmanyChinesecollegestudents.Istillclearlyrememberhowanin-depthconversationIhadwithoneofthemshockedme.
Thestudentsaid,“Kai-Fu,IhopeI’llbecomeassuccessfulasyouare,inashighapositionasyours.Itmustfeelverysatisfyingandpowerfultomanagesomanypeople.WouldyoupleasetellmehowIcanclimbthecorporateladderrighttogettoaseniorexecutive’sposition?
”
Ididn’texpectastraight-Astudentofaprestigiousuniversitytohavesuchashallowinterpretationofsuccess.ButhiswayofthinkingreflectedthestandardmeasurementofsuccessinChinesesociety,whichsimplyjudgesstudentsbytheirgradesandadultsbasedontheamountofmoneyorpowertheyhave.
ManyotherChinesestudentssharethesameviewasthewould-beexecutivebecausethat’swhattheirparentshaveinstilledinthem.It’shardformetoblamethoseparentsbecauseChinawaspoorfortoolongandtheyhadverydifficultliveswhentheywereyoung.Finally,the21stcenturybeganwithdrasticimprovementsonthelivingstandardsinChina.It’snaturaloftheChineseparentstowishfortheirchildrenwhattheyneverhad,whichistogetrichbyseizingopportunitiesinthefastgrowingeconomy.
However,thedesireforquickwealthoftencloudspeople’sjudgment.That’swhypiracyandcorruptionarerampantinChina.ItbasicallyrequiresacompletechangeofmindsettotrulyeradicateChina’spiracyandcorruptionproblems,anditshouldstartwiththeupcominggeneration.
Chinesecollegestudentsofthe21stcenturyhavemuchbetterresourcesandmanymorechoicesthantheirparentsdid.Butwhiletheimprovedlivingstandardsandmoreopenpoliticalclimategivethemthefreedomofchoice,theydon’tnecessarilyhavethewisdomandexperiencetochoosewhat’sreallyrightforthem.
ThestudentsfeelthatIhavewhatittakestohelpthem.IknowChineseculturewellenoughtounderstandwheretheyarecomingfrom,andIknowWesternculturewellenoughtoshowthemhowtobeaworldcitizeninthiseraofglobalization.Iamviewedas“successful”;thereforemywordswouldbecredible.Iamamongthefew“successful”peoplewhoarealsowillingtospendtimewiththem.
ThemoreIthinkaboutit,themoreIrealizewhyitwasmyfather’slastwishformetohelpmakeChinaabetterplace.Hewiselysawthecapabilityofaccomplishingthismissioninme.
AsaChineseAmerican,IseemakingChinagrowintellectuallyashelpingAmericaaswell.ItiscertainlyinAmerica’sbestinteresttohavetheworld’slargestpopulationasafriendlyallyratherthanapotentialthreat.AmoreenlightenedChinawillhaveamoreunderstanding,morestable,andmoremutuallybeneficialrelationshipwiththeUnitedStates.
TobenefitnotonlyChinabutalsoAmericaandeventuallythewholeworld,IhavekeptadvisingChinesecollegestudentssince2000,theyearIpublishedapublicletterinChinesetitled,“MyfirstLettertoChineseStudents---Let’sStartwithaDiscussionofHonestyandIntegrity.”BynowIhavepublishedsevenpubliclettersaddressingissuesofChinesecollegestudents.Ihavealsobeengivingmorethan300speechesatChineseuniversitieseveryyear.
PlanningforaDreamUniversity
Everytimeaftergivingaspeechatauniversity,Iwouldhaveachatwiththeuniversitypresidentandafewdeans.Theyhaveallcomplainedtomeaboutthelessthansatisfactoryqualityoftheirfaculty.Theyhavetoldmethatgoodstudentswon’tstaytoteachaftertheirgraduationbecausetheprofessors’salariesarelow.Thelowsalariesresultinthelackofexcellentprofessors.Theprofessorswhoarenotknowledgeableenoughintheirspecializedfieldsmaketheirstudentsunhappyandlowerthesocialstatusofprofessorsingeneral.Thatinturnmakesitdifficulttoraiseprofessors’salaries.Allthesesituationshaveformedaviciouscycle.
Whilecomplainingaboutthelackofhighlyqualifiedfaculty,thesepresidentsanddeanswouldshowmearoundandraveabouttheirnewbuildings.Thathasmademesigheverytimeafterspeakingwiththem.IwonderifChina’suniversitypresidentswillevertakeprideintherenownednewprofessorstheyhavehiredinsteadofthepolishednewbuildingsontheircampuses.WhenwilleverycollegegraduateinChinaseeteachingasadesirableprofessioninsteadofbuyingintothatsaying,“Thosewhocan’tdo,teach”?
OnedayIfeltcompelledtowritedownallmyobservationsofChinesecollegeeducation’sproblemsandmysuggestionsforsolutions.Iheardthen-vice-premierLiLanqing(LibeinghisfamilynameasChina'sofficialEnglishtranslationofhisnamefollowstheChinesetraditiontoputfamilynamefirst)careddeeplyabouteducation,soIwrotealettertohim.
SoonMr.Lihadoneofhisviceministerscontactme.Theviceministerinvitedmetohavedinnerwithhimandsaid,“VicePremierabsolutelyagreeswithyourcommentsonoureducation.Hehaspassedyourlettertothoseinchargeofeducationpolicies.”
Theviceministerlaterarrangedformetoseethevicepremierinhisoffice.WehadaprofounddiscussionofChina’scollegeeducation.HeaskedmetohelphimfindfeasiblewaysofimprovingChineseuniversities.
Afterthat,Ibegantodoresearchonpostsecondaryeducation.EventhoughmydayjobwasbusierthaneverafterItransferredtotheMicrosoftheadquarters,IsqueezedtimetoreadeverythingIcouldfindabouthighereducationandtooklotsofnotes.

WhyareprivateuniversitiessosuccessfulinAmerica?
