Abstract:
“JaneEyre”isoneofthegreatestmasterpiecesofthe19thcenturyintheEnglishliteraryworld.Manypeopleconsidereditasawonderfulworks;becauseitformedanobviouscomparisonwiththesocialvalueinBritishandfurthermoreitwaswrittenbythefeminine,forthephenomenonofmalesuperioritydominatedthewholesocietyatthattime.Almostallpersonsthoughtliteraturewasnotthewomen’scareer,andwomencouldnotregarditastheirjobs,neither.Sothebirthof“JaneEyre”wasashockingworks.ThispaperaimsatcommentingbrieflyonJaneEyre’scharacteristicsofrebellion.Theheroineinthenovelborealldifferentkindsofoppressionsfromthefeudalisticsociety,butshewasstrong,withherintelligent,kindandpuregettingrespect,freedomandapieceofgreatlove.Believingthatmostofreadersespeciallywomeninuntowardcircumstancegetmuchencouragementfromthisclassic.Thisessayisaccomplishedwithexamplestostateherrebellionindetailandcombinewiththepracticalcasestoletpeopleknowwhatenlightenmentswecangetfrom.

Introduction
JaneEyre,averyclassicheroineofafamousnovelwrittenbyCharlotteBronte,wasatypicalrebelliousfemininein19thcentury.Shewasasuccessfulfigureundertheauthor’sworks.Inthenovel,shewasself-respect,independentandkind-hearted.JaneEyrewasagreatestmasterpieceintheworldnotonlyshockedthewholeliteraryatthattimebutalsoencouragedmanypersonswhowereonthelowerrungs,especiallyforwomen.Sincewomenhadnoopportunity,noright,nopositionatthattime.Thisnovelwasbornin19thcenturywhichwasaturbulentageandtheCasteSystemwasquitestrict.WomeninthatBritishtimehadlittleindependentvoice.Theyhadnochoicebuttobearalldifferentkindsofoppressionsfromfeudalism.IntheCapitalists’eyes,theywereonlythetoolsformachines,letalonefreedomandindependent.PeoplewhohavereadthisnovelmayhavestronglyfeltthattheauthoristheprototypeofJaneEyre.Thestoryofthisnovelisfictional,buttheheroineandmanyotherfigures’livingenvironment,characteristicsandotherdetailsareallfromtheauthorandherrelativepersons’experiences.(廖洪中2003:
108)Withastoryaboutthelifeofanorphan,CharlotteshowedusthemiserablesituationforBritishwomenatthattime,reflectingwomenonhowtogetridoftherequestfrommalesoppressionsanddiscriminations.ItwasthegreatpioneeringcreationinBritishliterature,whichresultedinatremendousresponse.Inthisworks,wecanseetheauthor’ssilhouetteeverywhere.JustlikewhatCharlotteBrontesaid,Janewasnotpretty,notrich,notpride,butshewasintelligent,enthusiastic,humble,justlikeherself.Afterfinishingthisnovel,theenlightenmentfromitisweshouldnotyieldtoanyevilforces.Everyoneinthisworldisequalandweenjoythesamerightswithotherpersons.Alsoweshouldnotbetimid;inverselywehavetobebravetopursuethetruth,honestyandbeauty.JaneEyresufferedfromagreatdealofinsultandcontemptuouslook,especiallyinGateshead.Butshewasnotanordinarygirl.Whenbulliedbythem,shewouldhititbackpowerfully.Sofromthisnovel,wecaneasytoseeatthebottomofJane’shearthowstrongshewas.
1.Background
Charlotte,oneofthreeBronte’ssisterswhowereallquitefamousinBritishliterature,wasborninYorkshire,England.Herfatherwasaclergybutknowledgeable,andhermotherdiedwhenshewasfive.Afterthreeyears,Charlottewassenttoaboardingschooltogetherwithhersisters.Butunfortunately,hertwosisterswereinfectedthetuberandlatertheyweredead.Sotheybackhome.Charlottelivedthroughahardchildhoodthataffectsherfuturelifegreatly.SheputhercharacteristicsintoJaneEyreandletreadersknowwhathardshipnotonlyshehadsufferedfrombutalsotheBritishwomenhadlivedthrough.Inhernovel,JaneEyrewasapoorgirl.Shewasnomoneyandnotbeautiful;nevertheless,Janewaspure,noble,self-respectandindependent.Whenbeingaprivateteacher,shelovedRochestergraduallywhowasoncehermaster.TheexperienceofJanewasthesamewithCharlotte.WhenCharlottewasstudyingFrenchinBrusselsbuiltbyEllacouple,shewasalsolovedherFrenchteacher.Butthepitywasthathehadgotmarried.TherewaslittlepossibilityforCharlottetogetmarriedwithhim.SoshehopedthatJanecouldfinallycometrueherdreamandbetogetherwithherlover.Wearesohappytoseethatthefinaldestinyofheroineunderauthor’swritinghadagoodending.Formyeyes,itwasonlyauthor’sfantasyandshehopedthisfantasycouldberealizedonJaneEyre.
Depressingsorrowfulmood,Charlottewasbacktoherhometownanddecidedtopreparetoestablishtheschool,butatlastshefailed.However,shedidn’tgiveup.Inreverse,shewasstrivingforherself.JustthesamewithJane,thoughtheroadwasfullofthorns,shewasalwaysinsistingon.Therewasnovestigeofbackward.Thespiritsofindependent,rebellion,self-respectshowedupineverycorner,especiallytherebellion.JustbecauseJanewantedtobeindependentandfree,shehadnochoicebuttorebel.ItwasthesespiritsthatJaneEyregotthepurestandnoblestlove.

Atthispart,IwilltalksomethingabouttherebellionspiritofJaneEyreinGateshead.Generallyspeaking,thepurposeofanydefianceistogetoneselffreedomandequality.Thereasonwhytheyhaverebellionsisthatthesepeopleareunderill-treatment.Inthisclassicnovel,therebellionisalwayscompanyingwithJanethatisformedbythecomplicatedenvironments.
JaneEyrewasanorphanwholostherparentsafterherbirthandlivedwithFamilyReedintheGatesheadwhereshesufferedfrommuchimaginableill-treatment.JaneEyrehadtodependonherauntforsupport,butunluckilyherauntdislikedherandlookedupdownher.(CongXiao2010:
106)Alsoherbrotherandsistersdistainedher,thinkingthatshewasjustapoorgirlandhadnothing.Onlyaten-year-oldgirlshouldbearsuchpain,itwasreallyanamazingthing.However,whatcomfortedourreaderswasthatJaneheldonit.Shewassostrongthatnothingcouldbeeasytostrikeherdown.IntheGateshead,thecharacteristicofrebellionwasgraduallygrownup.
Janewasasuccessfulfigure,becauseshedaredtobreakthroughthetraditionalthoughts,neverthinkingofherselfasaslaveandalwaystryingherbesttoescapefromtheconstrainedfreedom.Shewaskind-hearted,humbleandhonest.Despitehershortnessandplain-looking,shewasoftenfullofconfident.Butherrelative,Mrs.Reed,wasarudeanduneducatedwomanwhohadnevertreatedJanewell.Shewasasnobbywomanandneverthoughtofothers.Inhereyes,therewasonlyawordthatwasmoney.ShedidnotlikeJaneandoftenabusedher.ButJanewasnoteasytobebullied.WhenMrs.ReedscoldedJaneexcessively,Janewouldtalkbacktoherpowerfully.AndifJohn,thesonofMrs.Reed,abusedher,shewouldresistitcrazily,either.TherebellioninfrontofMrs.Reedwasobvious.ThedaysintheredroomlitupthesparkofJaneEyre’srebellionfurther.Shethoughtifshedidn’thavedefiance,thenshewouldbedead.AsMatthewArnoldsuspectsthatJaneEyreissuchawomanwhoyearnstoescapeentirelyfromdrawingroomsandpatriarchalmansions.(LiZhou2010:

2.1RebellionundertheIll-treatmentfromJohnRead
Fromthebeginningofthefirstchapter,wecanknowthatJaneEyre’slivingwasunhappy,forthewriterpointingoutthataheartsuddenlybythechidingsofBessie,thenurse,andhumbledbytheconsciousnessofmyphysicalinferioritytoEliza,John,andGeorgianaReed.(CharlotteBronte2008:
1)SinceJanehaslivedwithfamilyReedtogether,shedidhaveagoodlifeuntilheruncledied.Fromthenon,everyoneinReedhousestartedtobiasherandbullyher.Later,shewasevenabusedbythem.AtGateshead,theonewhoalwaysabuseJaneEyrewasJohnReed.JohnReed,elderfouryearsthanJane,wasMrs.Reed’sonlydarlingson.Sonomatterwhathehaddone,noonewouldscoldhim,instead,allofthemwouldthinkthatitmustbetheJane’sfault.Attheinitialstage,maybeJanehadalittlefrightenedtoJohnwhenshewasabusedbyhim.Forexample,asJaneEyresaid:
