"Havingheardthisfromthehostess,theyoungmanwasspeechlessforalongtime.Indeed,intheworldtoday,itisnoteasyfortheeldergenerationtokeepuptodatewiththerapiddevelopmentoftechnology.
ThisstoryremindedmeofmyconcernswhenIfirstlefthomeforcollegethreeyearsago:
Myparentsdon'tunderstandEnglish.Theycouldn'tidentifythebuttonsmarkedinEnglishonourremotecontrols.SowhenIwasawayfromhome,whowouldhelpthemselectChinesesubtitleswhentheywantedtowatchaforeignmovieonourDVD?
Myparentsdon'tusepinyin,thephoneticsymbolsforChinese.Therefore,theycouldn'tinputChinesecharactersintotheircellphonesusingthekeyboard.Withoutme,whomcouldtheydependonwhentheyneededtoreplytoatextmessage?
Iworriedalot,sobeforeIleft,IcarefullypreparedaflowchartonhowtooperatetheDVDplayer,andstoredasmanytemplatemessagesinmyparents'phonesasIcouldpossiblythinkof.
Fortunately,myeffortsdidworkformyparents.However,whatmakesmemoreoptimisticisthatsocietyatlargeisbecomingmoreconcernedabouttheeldergeneration,andthefruitoftechnologicalinnovationisnolongerbelievedtobeanassetonlyfortheyoungpeople.Today,withsimpleChineseinstructionsontheremotecontrol,evenmy80-year-oldgrandfathercanplayhisfavoriteTVprogramonaDVD.Lastyear,withthemoneyIearnedfromapart-timejob,Iboughtmymotheranewcellphonewhichsupportshandwrittenmessagesinsteadofinputtingwordsthroughakeyboard.Andnow,mymothernolongerhastousethetemplatesmessagesI'vestoredforher,instead,shenowsendsmemessagesaslongas300words.ThejoyIhavewhenreadingthosetextmessagesisinexpressible,notonlybecauseofthewordsshewrites,butalsobecauseourtechnologyhasindeedbecomearealblessinginherlife.
Twoyearsago,thecounterserviceinourneighborhoodbankwasreplacedbyanATMstation.Withthoseintelligentmachines,peoplecancarryoutalltheirregularbankingservices.Myfather,however,wasnotusedtosuchachange.Thereafter,healwayswalkedthreeblocksfurthertoabankwithacountertousetheirservices.Inthefuture,however,thiswillnolongerhappen,becausewhenIwenttothatATMstationagainlastspringfestival,Ifoundadelightfulchange:
theterminalstherehaveadoptedavoiceguidancesystem.WhileIwasthere,Inoticedagreyhairedmanusingthevoiceinstructions.Anddespitehishesitationbetweenpressingthebuttons,heleftthebankwithasatisfactorysmile.Whatamarvel!
Myvisionforthefuturewasunfoldingbeforemyveryeyes.Atthatmoment,Irejoicedthinkingofmyfather,someday,standingthereusingthebankingservice.IrejoicedthinkingofmyselfthatwhenIbecomeold,thenewinventionscanstilleasemyliferatherthanmakingthelifeharder.

HowdidsomeofyougettoMacau?
Onlywhenwebelievethattherealityisnotrealcanwesoarwithourdreams.

ThefirstdoorIseeistheopportunitytostudydifferentkindsofsubjectsthatinterestus.Myauntsaidshewashappytostudymanagement,butshewasalsohappythatshecouldattendlecturesonancientChinesepoetryandonShakespeareandrama.Asformyself,IamanEnglishmajor,butImayalsogotolecturesonhistory.Tome,ifcollegeeducationinthepastemphasizedspecialization,now,itemphasizesfreeandwell-roundeddevelopmentofeachindividual.Soallthefineachievementsofhumancivilizationareopentous.
Theseconddooristhedoortotheoutsideworld.Learninggoesbeyondclassroomsandnationalboundaries.Myauntremembersherpreviouscollegedaysasmonotonousandevencallshergeneration"frogsinawell."Buttoday,astheworldbecomesaglobalvillage,itisimportantthatourneighborsandwebeopen-mindedtolearnwithandfromeachother.Ihavemanyfellowinternationalclassmates,andIamapplyingtoanexchangeprogramwithauniversityabroad.Asformyaunt,sheisplanningtogetanMBAdegreeintheUnitedKingdomwhereherdaughter,mycousin,isnowdoinghermaster'sdegreeinbiochemistry.Wearenowtakingtheopportunitytostudyoverseas,andwhenwecomeback,we'llputtousewhatwehavelearntabroad.
Thethirddooristhedoortolifelonglearning.Asnewideasappearallthetime,wealwaysneedtoacquirenewknowledge,regardlessofourage.Naturally,myauntherselfisthebestexample.Manyofmyaunt'scontemporariessaythatsheisamazinglyup-to-dateforamiddle-agedwoman.Shesimplyresponds,"Agedoesn'tmatter.Whatmattersisyourattitude.Youmaythinkit'sstrangethatIamstillgoingtocollege,butIdon'tthinkI'mtoooldtolearn."Yes,sheisright.Sincethegovernmentremovedtheagelimitforcollegeadmissionsin2001,therearealreadysomeuntraditionalstudents,sittingwithusinthesameclassrooms.Likethesepeople,myauntisoldbutsheisveryyounginspirit.Withherincredibleenergyanddetermination,sheembodiesbothtraditionandmodernity.
