ASABEisaprofessionalandtechnicalorganization,ofmembersworldwide,whoarededicatedtoadvancementofengineeringapplicabletoagricultural,food,andbiologicalsystems.ASABEStandardsareconsensusdocumentsdevelopedandadoptedbytheAmericanSocietyofAgriculturalandBiologicalEngineerstomeetstandardizationneedswithinthescopeoftheSociety;principallyagriculturalfieldequipment,farmsteadequipment,structures,soilandwaterresourcemanagement,turfandlandscapeequipment,forestengineering,foodandprocessengineering,electricpowerapplications,plantandanimalenvironment,andwastemanagement.
NOTE:

Consensusisestablishedwhen,inthejudgmentoftheANSIBoardofStandardsReview,substantialagreementhasbeenreachedbydirectlyandmateriallyaffectedinterests.Substantialagreementmeansmuchmorethanasimplemajority,butnotnecessarilyunanimity.Consensusrequiresthatallviewsandobjectionsbeconsidered,andthataconcertedeffortbemadetowardtheirresolution.

1Purposeandscope
1.1ThepurposeofthisStandardistoestablishterminologypertinenttograincombinedesignandperformance.Itisintendedtoimprovecommunicationamongengineersandresearchersandtoprovideabasisforcomparativelistingofmachinespecifications.
2Combinecomponents
2.1Header:
Theportionofthecombinecomprisingthemechanismsforgatheringthecrop.
2.1.1Gatheringwidth:
Thedistancebetweenthecenterlinesoftheoutermostdividerpoints;expressedinmeterstothenearesthundredth.Whereadjustabledividersareusedthemaximumandminimumdimensionsshallbestated.
2.1.2Grainheaderwidth:
Thedistancebetweenthesidesheetsoftheheadermeasuredimmediatelyabovetheforwardtipsofthesicklesections;expressedinmeterstothenearesthundredth.
2.1.3Maize(earcorn)headerwidth:
Theaveragedistancebetweenthecenterlinesofadjacentpickingunitsmultipliedbythenumberofunits.Wheretheheaderwidthisadjustable,maximumandminimumdistancesbetweencenterlinesshallbestated,expressedincentimeterstothenearestwholecentimeter.Themaximumandminimumheaderwidthsshallthenbeexpressedinmeterstothenearesthundredth,andthenumberofpickingunitsshallbestated.
2.2Cuttingmechanism:
Thatdeviceontheheaderforseveringtheplantstalks.Mayincludereciprocating,rotary,continuous,scissor-type,orothermechanismsforsevering.
2.2.1Sickle:
Acuttingmechanismwhichusesareciprocatingcutter.
2.2.1.1Sicklefrequency:
Thenumberofcycleswhichthesicklemakesinagivenperiodoftime.Onecycleisthefullmovementofthesickleinonedirectionanditsreturntothestartingpoint.Frequencyshallbeexpressedinhertz.
2.2.1.2Sicklestroke:
Thedistancethatapointonthesickletravelswithrespecttothecenterlineofaguardinonehalfcycle;expressedinmillimeters.
2.3Pickup:
Adeviceforgatheringacropfromawindrow.
2.3.1Pickupwidth:
Theminimumdistanceincludingthewidthoftheoutermostconveyingelementsbutnotincludingthegatherofflaredsidesheets;expressedinmeterstothenearesthundredth.
2.4Cuttingmechanismheight:
Theheightoftheforwardtipofanycuttingbladeorsicklesectionabovetheplaneonwhichthemachineisstanding,measuredunderthefollowingconditionsandexpressedincentimeters:
2.4.1Themaximumandminimumdimensionsshallbeinthehighestpointandthelowestpointtowhichthecutterbarcanberaisedorloweredwiththestandardliftmechanism.
2.4.2Tireandwheelequipmentshallbestated,andtiresshallbeinflatedtothefieldoperatingpressuresrecommendedbythecombinemanufacturer.
2.4.3Theplaneonwhichthecombineisstandingshallbesubstantiallylevel.
2.4.4Theheaderinstalledatthetimeofmeasuringshallbestated.
2.4.5ThegraintankshallbeeffectivelyemptyinaccordancewithAmericanNationalStandardANSI/ASAES312,CapacityDesignationsandUnloadingPerformanceforCombineGrainTankSystems.
2.5Rotatingthreshingorseparatingelements
2.5.1Threshingcylinder:
Arotatingelement,whichinconjunctionwithastationaryelementadjacenttoit,isfittedprimarilytopromotethreshing.Thecropbeingthreshediscontainedbetweenrotatingandstationaryelementsforlessthan360deg.
2.5.2Threshingrotor:
Arotatingelementsimilartoathreshingcylinderexceptthatthecropiscontainedfor360degandmaypassaroundtherotoraxisoneormoretimes.
2.5.3Separatingcylinderorrotor:
Definedasforthreshingcylinderorrotor,exceptthattheterms“separating”and“separated”replace“threshing”and"threshed”.
2.5.4Rotaryseparator:
Analternativetermforarotarydevice,similartoacylinder,whichisfittedtopromoteseparationonly.
2.5.5Cylinderorrotorthreshingorseparatingdiameter:
Thediameterofthecirclegeneratedbytheoutermostpointoftheappropriaterotatingelementasitrotatesaboutitsownaxis,dimensionD,Figs.1,2,3,and4,expressedinmillimeters.
2.5.6Cylinderorrotorthreshingorseparatinglength:
Thelengthofthecylindricalvolumegeneratedbytheoutermostpointsofthecylinderorrotorelements,asthecylinderorrotorrotatesaboutitsownaxis,andasappropriatetoitsthreshingorseparatingsection,dimensionL,Fig.2,expressedinmillimeters.
2.5.7Singleormultiplecylindersorrotorsmaybedisposedlaterally(seeFig.3)orlongitudinally(seeFig.4)withinthecombine.Ifmultiplecylindersorrotorsareused,thenumbershallbestatedandthedimensionsgivenasinFigs.3and4.
2.6Concave:
Aconcave-shapedstationaryelementadjacenttothethreshingcylinderorrotorfittedprimarilytopromotethreshing.Inthe

NOTE:
Whenusingthismeansofdefiningthearclengthoftheconcave,itisessentialthatthediameteroftheassociatedcylinderorrotorbequotedalso(seeFig.1).
2.6.4Concavearea:
Theproductoftheconcavewidth,orlength,andarclength,expressedinsquaremeterstothenearesthundredth.
2.6.5Ifmorethanoneconcaveisused,thisshallbesostated,andthedimensionsandareasshallbegivenseparately.
