摘要

1.Introduction
ThenovelistofWutheringHeights,EmilyBronte,livedinthethirtiesofthenineteenthcenturywhenthestrugglebetweentheworkersandcapitalistsbecamethefundamentalcontradictioninEnglishsociallife.Thegreatmiseryoftheworkersledtoanupsurgeoflabormovementsandtheorganizationoftheworkersintounions.Thecryingsocialcontradictionswerereflectedinliteraryworksofthetimeandanewliterarytrend-criticalrealismappeared.Thecriticalrealistsnotonlygaveasatiricalportrayalofthebourgeoisieandalltherulingclasses,butalsoshowedprofoundsympathyforthecommonpeople.
Emilywasthefifthchildofapoorclergyman,andthewholefamilylivedonthewildmoorsoftheNorthofEngland.TheBrontechildrenkeptverymuchtothemselvesandhadtodependentirelyontheirownresources.Theylovedwalkingonthemoors,andEmilyinparticulardevelopedapassionateloveoftheroughmoorlandscenery;
athome,theyreadwhatevertheycouldlaytheirhandsonandlivedmoreandmoreintheworldofimagination.Emilyhadapoeticimaginationwhichwasaspiritmoresomberthansunny,morepowerfulthansportive.AccordingtohersisterCharlotteBronte,“Emilywasclever,benevolent,butverystubborn.Strongerthanaman,simplerthanachild,hernaturestoodalone.”
WutheringHeightswastheonlynovelofEmilyBronte,butithadanunchangeableplaceintheliteraryworld.TheverystorybeganwhenHethcliff,ahomelessorphan,wasbroughtupbyMr.Earnshaw,theownerofWutheringHeights.Soontheboyandtheowner’sdaughter,Catherine,becameinseparablefiendsandhadwildpassionwttheachother.Butaftertheoldowner’sdeath,hisson,HindleyabusedHetheliffandtreatedhimasaservant.Catherinecontinuedhercloserelationshipwithhim,whichreleasedhimfromhissufferalittle.However,aftermeetingEdgarLinton,ayounggentlemanformThrusherossGrange,CatherinefeltitwouldbeadegradingforhertomarryHethcliffthoughshelovedhimdearly.Overhearingthisconfession,Hethcliffdisappearedinarageofshameanddespair,andwasnotheardformanyyears.Heart-brokenforthelossofherbeloved,CatherinefellbadlyillandlatermarriedEdgar.Justshortlyaftertheirmarriage,Hethcliffreturnedwithsurprisinglygoodmannersandwealth,andsetaboutseekingrevengeonallwhohadwrongedhim.HedeviouslylentmoneytothedrunkenHindleyinordertoincreasehisdebtsandfinallygotWutherinHeights.HemarriedIsabella,Edgar’ssister,andtreatedherasatooltoenrageEdgarandinheritThrushcrossGrange.Catherine,tornbetweenherloverandhusband,becameveryillanddiedinchildbirth.UnbearablewithoutCatherine,Hethcliffgrewevencruelertohisenemies.HeraisedHindley’sson,Hareton,asacommonlaborwithouteducation.HethenforcedEdgarandCatherine’sdaughter,youngCatherine,tomarryhissicklyson,youngLinton.Thoughcruellyrevengedhimselfonthetowfamilies,HethcliffgotnohappinessatallbutgrewmoremiserableinthememoryfotCatherine.Atlast,hediedofstarvationandwentwithCatherine’ssoultogetheronthemoors.
ThenovelWutheringHeightsarefullofloveandhatredwhicharebothconflictedandcombined.Theimpressive,relentlessandvigorouslovearousesimplacableemotionsindepthofthereader’sheartwithitsultimatepassion,infatuationandgreatmiseries.Thehatredformthedeepestbottomoftheheart,whichhasboughtsomanypains,shocksthereader’sbrain.Inthefollowingpassagewewilllearnthestorytogetherthroughanalyzingthedifferentkindsoflove,thehatredcausedbyloveandtherebirthoflovedefeatshatred.
2.Heathcliff’scharacteristicduality
2.1.Heathcliff’snaturalkindnessandlove
HeathcliffwaslikeablankpaperwhenhewasfirstlybroughttoWutheringHeights,Hewaspureandonlyhadhisnaturalideology.Whenhewasinanewplace,hefeltstrangeandkeptsilent.Gradually,therewassomethingappearedinthisblankpaper.InfluencedbykindheartedMr.Earnshaw,hisnaturalkindnesswasstimulated.WhenMr.Earnshawdied,Heathcliffwasdesperatelygrievedandsetupaheart-breakingcry.Fromthatwecanseehisnaturalkindness.
Heathcliffalsohadstrongloveinhisheart.It’sakindofnaturalandpurelove.HelovedCatherinemorethanhimself.HislovetoCatherinewasfaithfulandlong-lasting.WhenCatherinewasengagedwithEdgarLinton,heleftWutheringHeights.HehadneverleftWutheringHeightsbeforeforanyreason,evenwhenHindleytreatedhimverybadly.WhenhereturnedWutheringHeightswithmoneyandpower,hestilllovedCatherine.HishappinesscouldonlybegainedfromCatherine’slove.Hetookrevengeonpeoplewhohadmistreatedhimandgotwhathewanted,buthedidn’tfeelhappy,becausehemissedCatherine.Atlast,hecommittedsuicidewithadreamtomeetCatherine.It’sobviousthathisloveforCatherinewasverystrong.
2.2.Heathcliff’scruelty,selfishandhatred
HeathclifflovedCatherinesomuchthatheshouldhavetriedhisbesttomakehisbelovedCatherinehappy.However,hisvengefulmachinationsdrovehimcruelandmadehisheartfullofhatred.Hechangedhisstrongbutfrustratedlovetocruelty.Whenhebecameapowerful,fierceandcruelman,heacquiredafortuneandusedhisextraordinarypowersofwilltoacquirebothWutheringHeightsandThrushcrossGrange,theestateofEdgarLinton.HekilledHindleyandalsotookrevengeonCatherine,Hareton,CathyandLinton.HelovedCatherinesomuch,buthedidn’tthinkforher,insteadhemadeherheartbroken.Soheisalsoveryselfish.HeabusedIsabellawhowasthesister-in-lawofCatherinejusttowinThrushcrossGrange.
SoHeathcliffhimselfwasacontradiction.Hehadnaturalkindness,buthebecameverycruelwhenhereturnedWutheringHeightsandstartedtakingrevengeonothers;
Hehadstrongloveinheart,andhelovedCatherinemorethanhimself,buthedidn’tthinkforCatherine’slife,andmadeCatherineheartbroken.Hisheartwasfullofhatred,sohetookrevengeonpeoplewhomhehated.
3Heathcliff’sloveandhatred
3.1.LovebetweenCatherineandHeathcliff
WeseetheintenseandunbreakablelovebetweenCatherineandHeathcliff.Theirlovewasbasedontheirsharedperceptionthattheywereidentical,anditdenieddifferenceorchangeovertime.Whentheywerechildren,theysharedalotofcommonandhadwildpassionforeachother.Bothofthemwerewild,high-spiritedandalwaysspendawholedayplayinggamesonthemoorstogether.Theyalsoenjoyedfightingagainstconventionsandreligiousbeliefsinspiteofbeingpunishedseverely.TheywereproudandarrogantbyteasingEdgarandIsabella,thetwospoiledandcowardchildrenofThrushcrossGrange.Theygotonverywellandenjoythehappinestoflifeduringtheirearlychildhood.Atthatmoment,theirpassionwastheputestchildren’slove.AfterMr.Earnshaw’sdeathHeathcliffwasabusedcruellyandtreatedbyHindleyasaservant,allowednoeducationandforbiddentohavefurthercontactwithCatherine.HislifebecamemiserableandhismalevolenceforHindleygrewmoreandmore.ButCatherineinsistedherclosefriendshipwithhim,whichmoreoflessreleasedhispain.Theylovedeachwithoutconsideringtheunbridgeablegapoftheirdifferentsocialpositions.
However,afterspendingfiveweeksrecuperatingatThrushcrossGrangeCatherineseemedtohavebecomealaduandrealizedherdifferentsocialstatusfromHeathciff.Thoughshelovedhimmorethananythingelseintheworld,shewasfashionedbyEdgar’shandsomeface,gentlebehaviorandweathyfamily.HeathcliffonlyhearthatshewouldmarryEdgaranddidn’thearherlovepromisetohim,soheleftheringreatdespair.DuringCatherine’slastdays,Heathcliffmether,thetwoloversembarcedtightlyandkissedwithtear.Theyknewtheywouldbeseparatedagainbydeath,whichneitherofthemcouldbear.AfterCatherine’sdeath,Heathciffcriedfromhisdeepheart:
“Ibelieve-Iknowthatghostshavewanderedonearth.Bewithmealways-takeanyform-drivememad!
Onlydon’tleavemeinthisabyss,whereIcannotfindyou!
