Hemingway’sstatusasaremarkablewriterofhistimewasconfirmedwiththepublicationofAFarewelltoArmsin1929.Thenovelrepresentedafarewellbothforwarandforlove.In1937,hebecameaforeignreportercoveringtheSpanishCivilwar.Threeyearslater,hepublishedForWhomtheBellTolls.SetinSpainduringtheCivilwar,thenovelrestatedhisviewoflovefoundandlostanddescribedthetoughspiritofthecommonpeople.In1912,thesamejudgmentwasreflectedinhisportraitoffisherman,Santiago,withanindomitablespiritindefeat,inTheOldManandtheSea,whichwasawardedthePulitzerPrizein1953.HemingwaywontheNobelPrizeinLiteraturein1954.WithoneofthemostimportantinfluencesonthedevelopmentoftheAmericanshortstoryandnovel,HemingwayhasseizedtheimaginationoftheAmericanpubliclikenoothertwentieth-centuryauthor.Hediedbysuicide,inKetchum,Idaho,in1961.
