AsoneofthemostinfluentialAmericanwriters,Andersonisfamousforhisshortstorycollections,andwasamajorproponentintherevitalizationoftheAmericanidiominfiction.DeathintheWoodsisconsideredoneofAnderson’smostdistinctivestories,displayingmanyoftheingeniousnarrativestrategiesAndersoncultivatedinhisshortprose.
DeathintheWoodsispresentedasafirst—personnarrativebyanunreliablenarrator,whotellsthestoryofanoldwoman,Mrs.Grimes。
Itwasaflashbacknarrative.Theboywhotoldthestorygatheredallthefactshecouldfromthetimehewitnessedthedeathoftheoldwomanwhenhewasayoungboyuptothetimewhenhegrewupasamanandunderstoodtherealpointofthestory.Mrs。
